The NCAA tournament takes in, what, 68 teams? IMO, that's too many. Was it too many at 64? 48? I think 32 was too few.

For football 8 feels ideal. 4 isn't enough, 16 feels like too many. JMO though.

I agree.

If you open your mind to account for the conference championships (ACC, B1G, SEC, PAC12/BigXII), we already have an 8-team playoff.

Expanding the CFP erodes the importance of the conference title games, much like the 64-field has eroded it for the power conferences in basketball.

The current system is plenty.

When any of those initial field of 8 can win and STILL not get in... NO, we don't.

Doesn't matter here. The system is great and it's generating the buzz it needs to. That's all I care about.

Fair enough. Some preferred the old BCS (2 teams). I respect that, just don't agree.

a) Notre Dame agrees to play a full ACC football schedule, or
b) The CFP expands to 8

----

The playoff system is already at (kinda) 8 teams by way of the conference championships. There's no reason to expand the CFP to 8 teams because we'll start to see the same erosion of the regular season that we have in college basketball.

For instance, a friend of mine called this morning asking me "D, who's going to win tonight", to which my response was, "Dear, who's playing tonight?"

If ESPN is smart, they'll keep it at 4 as long as they can get away with it.

I disagree. I think eliminating 95% of the teams around mid season takes away from the excitement. Having more teams in the hunt would energize more fan bases & fans. We're not talking about making 1/4 of the teams available for the playoffs like in basketball, we're only talking 8.

We'll agree to disagree.

The beauty of the CFB season is that the regular season is a defacto playoff, where losses actually mean something (unlike college basketball).

We have plenty of teams in the hunt now..

Alabama
Clemson
Michigan
Ohio State
Wisconsin
Louisville
Washington
Oklahoma
Penn State

Auburn was in the hunt and just eliminated itself with a loss (sounds like a playoff to me).

well, right now we still don't have clear cut rules on who's gets in or how it works. All we know for sure is that Conference Championships play a big role with the committee

If you went to 8, you could nail down rules (such as top 4 conference champs), and still have room to include the "best teams"

Go to 8 and you could have:
1. Alabama (SEC Champion)
2. Clemson (ACC Champion)
3. Wisconsin (B1G Champion)
4. Washington (PAC 12 Champion)
5. Oklahoma (Big Xii Champion)
6. Western Michigan (MAC Champion-Best of the Rest Bid)*

7. Ohio State
8. Louisville

with these games:
Louisville @ Alabama
Ohio State @ Clemson
Western Michigan @ Wisconsin
Oklahoma @ Washington

It would be very simple to achieve, and add on to the current system

I like your 8, but I think the seeding would be much different than how you lay it out. It'd prolly shake out something like this, at least as of now:

1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Clemson
4. Washington
5. Louisville
6. Wisconsin
7. Oklahoma
8. Western Michigan

If you don't win your conference, you don't deserve to host a quarterfinal game

The top 4 need to be the top 4 CONFERENCE CHAMPS. you earn your position by earning it on the field....win your conference and you host

everything else is just speculative "poll-think" nonsense

I'm of the opinion that we have far too small of a sample pool to determine if the current system is or isn't good so let's pump the brakes on trying to replace something that isn't even a quarter of the way through it's first cycle yet.

I think that the B12 will fail around the time of the next TV negotiations/end of their GoR.

Then we will have 4 true power conferences, a tweener, and a G5.

At that point, the 4 conf champs will have an all but automatic invite (unless ND or TX is in the top 4). Then the CCG's will effectively (but unofficially) be the round of 8 for the playoff.

Why not let the conferences go divisionless & then let the committee choose the CCG participants? Top 4 winners advance to the CFP. This would be like expanding the playoffs without actually expanding the playoffs.

That would really stink.
