Time to turn out the lights
and drop to FCS. This program has been steadily declining since the first defections from CUSA.
I've always had hope that we'd move to bigger and better things but I've come to realize that mediocre leadership, no money, any school with a pulse starting a D1 football program and crappy coaching hires have left us where we are with a bleak future.
I hope I'm wrong but it is what it is.

why? so we can get drummed by those schools too bc of bad hires and then you can request that we go to Division II? besides, I think the lights are out already.

It's been over. After 4 years of Hopson, we may go back to 7-5/8-4 and NOLA but any shot at national relevance is over.

RE: Time to turn out the lights
Any shot at consistent national relevance ended in the early 2000s when we started going 5-3 in-conference nearly every year just as the paradigm of what college sports are began to change in earnest. The best we could ever hope for after that was the occasional 2011-type season and poll appearances.

8-4 sounds pretty good right now, Beagle. I'd be surprised if he ever got 8 wins.

He's got all he's going to get for this season, I believe.

Yup. In fact, three more blowouts are in store. La tech will put up 50 on us. UNT and ODU 40 at least.

RE: Time to turn out the lights
I know this is an emotion-fueled post, but there's absolutely no way we can just quit and drop down. That's not who we are. I know many of you have watched a lot more Southern Miss football than me. Many were season ticket holders before I was born. But I know the pain of bad losses. I was at UAB in '11. My Senior year I painted up for every single home game, despite 0-12. And I've seen how much fun basketball can be when we have a good product on the court.

So while we may suck and it seems like our leadership has no clue what they're doing, there's absolutely no way we quit. We keep pushing on, we improve, and we do better next year. Are there plenty of problems that need to be fixed? Absolutely. But our program isn't dead. So keep the lights on, make some changes, and return to what we used to be. Exciting football.

But I swear, if another Southern Miss team ever proclaims themselves a Nasty Bunch...you gotta earn that, not just make a flag.

There is a parallel between our fandom and our defenses in that regard.

Hopson was hired because weez po. The university needs to be honest about how broke the ath. dept is and stop BSing the fans. Might actually get some pity donations out of it (see UAB).

Agree athletics is suffering from low budget. Why cut revenue sports like football and basketball while 'exploring' other female sports? Better 'explore' how to enhance revenue generating sports before non-revenue.

So what, exactly, has the athletic department done to give anyone the impression it's not broke?

They haven't really given an indication that we're not broke, however you'd be surprised at the amount of fans that don't know how bad of shape we're in. Come out and say something like "if we don't have [insert amount of money here] then we may have to drop down or shut down a program".

Actually it started with the quote....." Nine wins is not good enough for Southern Miss." JB !! Twas the statement of death.

In this conference that statement should be accurate.

No one's being BSed, then. Those people are just amazingly out of touch (which should disqualify them from being described as "fans") or just remarkably stupid.
