Basketball Exhibition Weekend
Ohio takes down Rio Grande, 87-56. No contest from the first horn.

Over 9,000 in the Convo. Challenge any MAC school to do that for a regular season game. Let alone exhibition on November 5 04-rock

Ive never seen a fanbase as into attendance as Ohio fans, and I kinda hope it wouldn't be a contest against Rio Grande :) Is that the border patrol travelling team?

Meh...Have to brag at something you're good at. You guys are good (or at least have been) good at winning. Us...not so much all the time. But at least we have a way of getting consistent support from locals, alumni and students.

RE: Basketball Exhibition Weekend
Ohio didn't always have strong attendance.

Athletics support has coincided with the growth of the university over the last 30 years.

NIU has declining enrollment so it my be affecting alumni attitudes about athletics.

Good point. The biggest thing IMO that has led to Ohio's attendance growth is support of the (mostly non-degreed) locals. It's become the entertainment thing to do in SE Ohio.

Go to a game nowadays and it's like a Chuck-E-Cheese with so many kids and families running around. I don't see that as much when we go to road games.

Definitely support has broadened. Attendance started getting better with basketball in the 80's and it carried over to football in the 90's.

I know Ohio alums from Cleveland who graduated in the 70's would't want to go back to Athens because its too far out of the way. Alums who have been going back with children attending have seen the upgrades and know its not that remote anymore. Then once you are in Athens there are more options today than just getting a cheeseburger at the pub.

It's still a 3+ hour drive from the Cleveland area.

Not that Akron would get 9k for a home game anyways, but it's kind of impossible to do when your arena seats only 5500.

This is not to take anything away from your attendance number, but you should get that every game. I want to phrase this without putting a knock on your community, but what else is there to do in Athens besides Ohio Athletics?

At UB we had over 3,400 for our exhibition game, but we have to fight for the community's dollar with an NFL team, an NHL team, and two other Division I college basketball teams in our own backyard. Ohio has none of those challenges.

I love how the attendance argument always turns into the city schools claiming that country schools have the advantage because of nothing else to do, while the country schools claim that city schools have the advantage because there are so many local people. Can we all just admit that there are pros and cons to each?

Can we finally put this argument to rest? Anyone anywhere has countless entertainment options. It's particularly wrong and ironic in this case because attendance at Ohio is fueled by affection for visiting Athens. A significant chunk of that 9,000 drove more than an hour to get to the game, and many built a whole weekend on campus around it -- in large part just to be in Athens and on campus for a while. Attendance is driven by a lot of things, but "there's nothing else to do" is not one of them.

It's still a 3+ hour drive from the Cleveland area.

It was 5 hours back in the day. Most would take I-77 down to WV and then cut through an hour over to Athens, a stage on the route which now takes 30 minutes.

Going from I-71 and picking US 33 it can probably be done within 3 hours from many parts of Cleveland. Four lanes the whole way and tie it in with a trip to Columbus, something else that wasn't desirable back then.

Cincinnati (US 32) and Dayton (US 35) are 3 lane shots to Athens and in under 3 hours. Toledo is 3.5 hours on I-75 to US23 going through Columbus. There are a lot of good sized towns in near these population centers like Findlay, Marion, Mansfield that are even closer.

Athens is not that hard to get to but you're right its still pretty far and not many alums within an hour. They have a tickets for kids program that last year sold 400 season tickets to go to kids for social service agencies as an option if you can't make the games.

You make a great point because if the perception is "there nothing to do" in Athens they wouldn't bother making a trip.

Apply this logic to Olean, NY where St. Bonaventure is located. That is a place with nothing to do and nobody is going back.

"Attendance is high because there's nothing else to do in that town" is never used to justify the norm, only the exception.

RE: Basketball Exhibition Weekend
A pricing brochure for Ohio Bobcats basketball was just mailed to me and the pricing options are in another timezone compared to other MAC basketball schools.

Bobcat Black $300 + $1000 dollar donation per season ticket.
Platinum $255 + $225 dollar donation per season ticket.
Gold $225 + $100 dollar donation per season ticket.
Silver $190 + $50 dollar donation per season ticket.

Bobcat Black is courtside. Lower bowl season tickets in the Convo range from $480 to $240.

Well that's just not accurate. At Akron it is $1210 for floor seats (OU $1050) and between $410-$810 for the lower bowl seats ($240-$480 at OU). Reserved seats at Akron are $200 (OU it is $190). Both offer $60 general admission.

RE: Basketball Exhibition Weekend
everyone seems to overlook some of the biggest reasons we have consistently good crowds at Ohio home football and men's basketball events (and until this year, women's volleyball events) and that is our consistently good teams along with great in-game marketing promotions for the fans and of course the Marching 110. Case in point, yesterday, we had the women's team play, then the men's team with the full Marching 110 perform on the floor at halftime. then, later that evening we had the volleyball team. plus it was Dad's weekend.

The pricing say $1000/$750 donation for Bobcat Black seats so I think it depends if its a sideline front row or behind the basket.

It does sound like Akron is another MAC school with some high end demand for men's basketball. I doubt it exists in most other places in the MAC which is my point.

Right and when your in Athens you've most likely gone down for the day and not just the game so fans are more apt to stick around for another event.

Without looking I'd guess Kent and Toledo are up there too. As for Ball State, Northern Illinois and other schools that tend to draw poorly for basketball, I'd agree.
