Is it just me or do I sense that the NFL is losing popularity?
For the longest time, the NFL rarely intruded on Thursday nights, because it used to be that Thursday nights were the CFB equivalent of Monday night football. But now, the NFL have shown no qualms about taking Thursdays, or ESPN put them up to it. Would ESPN ever risk putting the NFL up against Friday night football and would there be a huge backlash against it? Could this give MLS the push it needs to be a much more popular league in the U.S.A.? Why did the NFL take Thursdays to begin with?

NFL Thursday games are not on ESPN. NFL came up with the every-Thursday plan itself and opened it up for bidding to the networks. This year the games are split between CBS, NBC, and NFL Network.
There's a federal law that prohibits televising NFL games on Friday or Saturday during HS/CFB football season, I think the ban runs from Labor Day weekend through the first Saturday in December. That was written into law as a compromise; the other part of the law, which the NFL needed, permits the NFL to negotiate TV contracts as a league (as opposed to each team having to negotiate its own TV deal).

The NFL has certainly peaked and it has nowhere to go but down, especially now with the danger of the concussion issue. The quality of play is not what it used to be either.

I wouldn't say downturn in interest but more like captivating contests. I mean the NFL went from Sunday games and MNF, to adding SNF, and then TNF. And with 3 prime time slots bidding for games each weak you can see that someone gets the shaft. It used to me MNF would be the prime game.... now SNF has it most weeeks. Also, TNF seems like the only national coverage for a lot of the "lesser" teams in the league most weeks.

I think that is related to the reduced practices the players negotiated.

And the quality of the players. The athleticism is as good as ever but not necessarily the overall quality of the players.
As I always say, this would be solved by contracting half of the teams in the league or demoting them to a new minor league.

Everything runs it's course, know one can really have thought the NFL could keep the level of popularity they have enjoyed indefinitely.
I'm not sure what the main cause is but it's one or the combination of many things. Concussions, sloppy play, internationalization, to many penalties, over saturation, bad prime time games, general malaise, etc, etc.

But it's not like the NFL is gonna decline and the MLS is gonna take over. The NFL is here to stay and if the NFL has declined in level of play, the NBA is worse in that regard. Love it or hate it, baseball is more or less the same as it was 50 years ago, which has its pluses and minuses.
