MLB 2016-17 Hot Stove Thread
figured get this started...

Saw this:

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/17945...nce-charge

also- key dates for winter:
•Nov. 3: Beginning at 9 a.m. ET, teams will have an exclusive five-day negotiation window with their impending free agents.
•Nov. 7: By 5 p.m. ET, teams must submit qualifying offers to their upcoming free agents. The QO is worth $17.2MM, up from $15.8MM last year. This is also the deadline for clubs to exercise their 2017 options over players whose contracts include them.
•Nov. 8-10: General managers’ meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz. While not as active as December’s Winter Meetings, the groundwork for many trades and signings will take place here, and a few moves figure to be completed.
•Nov. 8: Free agents become eligible to sign with any team.
•Nov. 14: Players must choose to accept or reject qualifying offers by 5 p.m. ET. Those who decline will become free agents.
•Dec. 1: The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ union expires.
•Dec. 2: Deadline for teams to decide whether to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players. The free agent market should expand to some degree on this day, albeit with relatively minor names.
•Dec. 4-8: Winter Meetings in National Harbor, Md. This period is among the most chaotic of the year for those who follow trades and free agency — often even more so than the days leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline. MLBTR will provide extensive coverage while the Winter Meetings are in effect. The meetings with conclude with the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 8.

Yeah, it's time. Who are your key free agents? Who's gonna stay? Who will your team go after?

For Dodgers it's pretty obvious: Jansen and Turner. I think Jansen, who was still a little under the radar at the beginning of the season, cemented himself as one of the top relievers in MLB this year, with his playoff performance really highlighting his value. He's gonna get a huge contract. I'm nervous that Friedman won't want to pay what he can get, and Dodgers don't have anyone near his level in the system. Chapman will be on the market but he's not gonna be a bargain either. I'd rather have Jansen. $20MM/yr for 4-5 yrs? They're each gonna drive the other's number up.

Turner - I don't know. He's had a great three year run and there are no third baseman FAs available near his level. He's going to get a nice contract but I'm not sure how big the market is. Comps are probably Longoria, Seager (Kyle, of course). So probably $17-$19MM/yr but it'll boil down to contract length. 4 yrs? He'll be 32 next season. Dodgers don't have a decent 3rd base prospect; this makes me nervous too.

Rich Hill is interesting. Dodgers can't give him a qualifying offer. He's 36, so I can't see offering him more than 2 years, but he was really good this year and I'd like to see him back if there's a decent deal to be made.

I'd love to see the Dodgers go after a 2nd baseman. Mets' Neil Walker is really the only decent one on the FA market. I'd be ok with that if his back is healthy.

I think the Nats will be interesting....

Ramos and Melancon the 2 big free agents. Drew a secondary one. Think Melancon is the one that they want to keep.

Other huge decisions are ss or cf. Could see the Nats getting one and putting Turner at the other.

Could see the Nats trade a pitcher to get some help as well. Nats are loaded at starter. Maybe Gio gets dealt.

think it's June at the absolute earliest.

Question RE: MLB 2016-17 Hot Stove Thread
BNraves are looking for one or two starters. And a catcher. Not sure it's smart to bring McCann back, and he's another lefty. Weiters is an option. Maybe they'll go cheaper. Too bad Ramos got hurt. Many teams fighting for fewer FA catchers.

Either way, happy Braves will be back as buyers and continuing to build what will hopefully be a serious contender for the near future.

RE: MLB 2016-17 Hot Stove Thread
i imagine the reds will try and move zach cozart and dat dude brandon phillips once more. i like bp though. we won't be competing anytime soon, might as well let someone who enjoys being here finish out his career here. the i guess the argument is let someone else develop, reinvest his money. he genuinely enjoys being a red somehow. the fans and media treat him like sh!t. i'm glad the cubs are good when we are down. it's hard to compete in the central when most of the division is competitive. but the cubs are in dynasty mode and the cardinals are the best run franchise in baseball. it might be awhile before the reds are relevant again. our best shot was in aught twelve. i sincerely thought we were going to win the world series after going up 2 games to 0 on the giants

Nats declined to extend a QO to Ramos. Not surprising, as I imagine they'll let him hit the market and if the price is low enough they'll swoop in. Can't help but feel bad for him though. Was in line for a nice payday, now you wonder if he'll ever get that chance again

Given the dearth of catching in MLB, I think he'll get a lot more than you think.

I think this one will be interesting. He isn't young (not old either), is coming off a poor second half and had a really bad injury. It's unlikely he gets any kind of big money this season and will absolutely have to reestablish his value at some point

I've got to think we'd be interested in him.

I think swoosh is going to be shocked when he signs his contract. Catching just so sparse now. I personally wouldn't but there's a sucker out there.

Question RE: MLB 2016-17 Hot Stove Thread
Braves sign R.A. Dickey to one-year deal with option to eat up some innings and bridge to their still young starting pitching in the low minors. Even brought out knuckleballer and HOFer Phil Niekro for this one:

Braves sign 42-year-old knuckleballer Dickey for 1 year, $8 million

and Braves now sign Bartolo Colon. last team to have 2 guys 42+ yrs old start 10+ games- 1990 Texas Rangers with Nolan Ryan and Charlie Hough.

For Mets- IMO a huge blow. They have no backup for their starters.

Welp, when Copollela said he needed to sign two starters who wouldn't be here for long, he wasn't kidding. The kids on the farm don't have anything to worry about so far.

interesting trade with Arizona and Seattle. Arizona gets Taijuan Walker and Seattle gets Jean Segura. I like Arizona getting Walker- he's underachieved a bit so far- but him getting to work presumably with Greinke to me is a winner.
