It's just about time Cal State-San Jose dropped football. When have they ever showed a pulse...in anything? They were rated well past 300 in the CBS preseason basketball poll recently. You'd think being a large state school in a fringe conference and in a major metro area that they'd have some success at some point (I get that there's a certain commuter school aspect but still...).

I stand by that even if they win.

SJSU also won a bowl game last season.

IIRC they've never been strong in men's hoops, their last NCAA tournament was 1996 ... but if that is disqualifying, then you must believe that every school that hasn't been to an NCAA men's basketball tournament in the last 20 years should drop out of D-I.

They were a sub-.500 weak team from the Big West that stole the auto-bid that year IIRC without Google. Their athletic program has been down for so long.

RE: This Week In Schadenfreude 2016 -- Week 10
Why all the hatorade on SJSU?

In 2012, the year before they joined the MWC, they finished #21 in the country
In 2013, they finished 5-3 in the MWC
In 2014, they finished 2-6 in the MWC
In 2015, they finished 4-4 in the MWC
In 2016, they are currently 2-3 in the MWC

So since joining the conference, they're 13-16.

UNLV is 10-20
Hawai'i is 6-23
UNM is 13-19
Wyoming is 11-17
Nevada is 12-16

So like I said, they've had one really good season recently. I'm talking about the whole package for them.

They have a lot of potential...I think...

I'm sure they have some wealthy Silicon Valley alumni, but AFAIK those folks are not pouring millions into athletics at SJSU, and money from donors is what any non-P5 athletic program needs to win big consistently, especially in football. We had a similar discussion here recently about UNLV's lack of big-money athletic support.

SJSU isn't going anywhere. Their on the field product is pretty much middle of the pack (lower middle, but middle) for the Conference. Replacing them with UTSA or NMSU or UTEP isn't going to really do much. Or walking away from Northern California is also probably problematic for recruiting purposes too for the other conference members.

Aside: SJSU serves a vital role to the Silicon Valley tech industry.

Kids who have merely a bachelor's degree in CS from Stanford or Berkeley think they should be making $1xx,000 right out of school. 07-coffee3

It doesn't help to have Stanford and other big schools practically in your backyard.

As if they're the only lesser team that has to deal with that. A&M is 90 miles away and Texas is around 150 and UH built a power from scratch in different eras. Louisville is surrounded by big time majors in every direction. So that's no excuse to almost never be relevant.

And I do admit I'm being harsh on them.

Houston has never had the money or fan following of UT or A&M, but in the 1960s they were able to take advantage of the fact that the Southwest Conference (and SEC) programs were still limiting themselves by being whites-only.

Louisville is in a basketball-crazy state with only one other major school, and no major pro franchises. And they also had integrated teams long before there were black athletes at UK.

Was 1996 the year that a 16 seed San Jose St won 3 or 4 straight games to win the 16 team WAC tournament? They were terrible, only won a few games that season but put together an incredible run in the tournament. This was a very good WAC too, back in the days when the WAC had Utah, New Mexico BYU, UNLV, a TCU with Tubbs as Coach, Fresno had Tark as Coach...those schools were consistently ranked and going to the tourney, but San Jose St beat them all that week...any one have any info on the year I'm talking about?
Cheers!
