RE: Men's and women's basketball bookend Rice sports weekend Nov 4-5
Marcus Evans was clearly the best player on the court on Saturday. Marcus Jackson played well overall, but with two pretty bad unforced turnovers that showed he still has to shake off some rust. Like his freshman year you turned around at the end of the game and he had 15 points, but they were quiet points. He is a great complement to some of the other scorers on the team, he does not force the action, but lets the game come to him. It was nice to see real activity on the rebounding front, Rice has not been that aggressive on the boards for years under Rhoades or Braun. Having this level of athlete really helps. Egor K. was really sub-par shooting early and at the charity stripe (despite the 23 points). I expect both will improve over the season. Bishop Mency was too timid offensively in the paint when he played but he was strong on defense. I thought Meyer and Harrison had rough first games and that Martin played above (my) expectations. Ako and R. Lott add great depth at the guard positions. I think both can and will play extended minutes this season. I would not have expected Cashaw to lead the team in minutes played for this game, but clearly Coach R. likes Connor on the court, relying on him as a leader.

1. I suspect Quez and Evans will lead the team in minutes over the course of the season.

2. Mencey has always been timid offensively, but he will contribute to the pressing defense on the 2nd team rotation.

3. I see us going small, with the 3 guard offense more often than not, simply because of our quality depth at guard...and Lott can shut down the opposing team's shooting forward defensively.

4. Drone may start games, but I'd be shocked if he sees more than 10 - 15 minutes of action per game. Quez, Martin and Meyers simply more talent and athletic than him. Andrew does not fit in Rhoades' fast paced offense and defense.

5. I can see Jackson and Egor getting regular, open 3-point opportunities on kickbacks following drives by Evans and Ako.

Evans should be the best player on the court in every game we play this year.

If Evans continues on this course, he will be the 1st legitimate 1st round NBA draft pick since Morris Almond.

IMHO, Connor is a great gap filler, does whatever is needed wherever. Always seems to be around the ball and the key play. Every team needs that complimentary player, like when the 76ers got Bobby Jones to replace George McGinnis. Before that, the joke was they needed 5 balls on the court to make it work when they were on offense.

Agree on Bishop and his offense, which kinda died last year, but he is a great 5-10 minute at a time defensive stopper. Also, the comment on Marcus-his points always seem quiet, but those are critical.

Isn't it great to wonder how in the world there will be enough minutes to play all these guys. Last time, I think we were truly even close to that situation was when Michael Harris was a senior or maybe never.

I agree with everything except #1. Quez won't lead us in minutes played or be even in the top 3-4. The first step is he needs to be a starter and I see him coming off the bench for now still (unless we're playing a super tall team and actually James Madison has some decent height).

Agree to disagree. Quez will be likely be a starter (along with the Marcus's, Egor and Drone), and he's the most versatile player on the team, capable of playing all 5 positions. Barring foul trouble, I think he'll be either #1 or #2 in minutes played per game.

I've seen no evidence that Marquez can play point guard. He might be able to defend a PG, but his ball handling left something to be desired at times last year..

So let's get more specific, so that we can look back at this later( kinda like stock predictions)
Wil Quez be a team leader in minutes from essentially day 1, or cumulative over the course of the season, or by the games toward the end of the season?

From Day 1. From everything I've seen and heard, barring injury, he'll be in the opening day starting lineup.
