Charlotte @ Southern Miss - 11/5/16
Spread opened up at Southern Miss -18. I'm guessing -14.5 or so will be the final line.

Great opportunity for Charlotte again to prove we belong. Win 3 out of our last 4 and we'd have 6 wins 03-cloud9

Cue up the "so you're saying theres a chance" memes.

I hope Charlotte shows well in this game, like they did versus Marshall. My son plays soccer with a kid whose dad is as much a diehard Charlotte fan as I am an ODU fan. The other parents assuredly get tired of our CUSA talk, but sure makes the practices and games go by faster. As our closest drivable rival, I hope both programs develop to a point where our games not only matter to us, but have an impact on the CUSA race, as well.

I'll cue this up....if you guys show up with heads screwed on straight, you guys easily have a chance....

us old timers have seen too much to call this one a gimme at this point....at least not from my perspective....

if we perform by design, we should win the game.....however, that's why you play 'em and find out how they shake out after 60 mins..

now, after getting the niceties out of the way, I hope we beat your arse! southern miss needs a big win going into the final three with two on the road....

04-cheers

We have yet to play anyone except Elon that we had a speed, size and strength advantage on. I don't see that changing on Saturday. Despite that, our DL has been a strength all year, and with the DB's playing a little better, I'd love to keep the bend but not break defense going.
On the offensive side of the ball, we haven't played a defense of USM's caliber since Klugh has been a starter...and we seem to be down two starting offensive lineman. I'm a little worried about that, but being mobile has helped him to this point. I have no idea how this turns out.

I don't think Charlotte wins, but I'd love to see us stalemate the game for 30 minutes at some point.

If we play like we did against Marshall, then Charlotte will have a real chance.

RE: Charlotte @ Southern Miss - 11/5/16
The Golden Eagles spend most of the game up 7ish points, without being able to put the Niners away. The Niners' defense starts to wear down/out, however, because Ogunjobi can't do it all and Southern Miss pulls away in the end to win it uncomfortably 35-24. It's a fun game and we hear half the people telling us it was fun to watch and the other half tell us we don't belong in year 2 of FBS. I drink a couple of beers.

Rinse and repeat.

Keep in mind Southern Miss had a 26-11 first down advantage. They outgained Marshall 474 to 226.

Sometimes the score just ends up being closer than it should be. (typically due to turnovers) Fumble, missed FG, and 1 legitimate drive by Marshall.

This is what I mean. It was a sloppy game. Sloppiness opens doors and gives hope to the opponent. We do that quite often.

Yeah, but my point is if you put up that type of game again (huge discrepancy in yards) you likely win by >20 points.

RE: Charlotte @ Southern Miss - 11/5/16
Four weeks ago I would have given us absolutely zero chance. I believe we only have a slight chance now but I'll take it. We are a different team since Klugh took over at QB and have rediscovered our running attack. This has given our beleaguered D some help. I agree with the conventional wisdom and think Southern Miss wears us down and opens it up late. Words can't describe though, how huge it would be if we can keep it close enough to steal it and beat Marshall and Southern Miss back to back on the road.

Dominant stat games have not led to the equivalent dominant score games this season. The Golden Eagles just can't seem to piece it all together this year.

When you start all your drives from your 17 yard line, you'll have lopsided stats and close scores.

Special teams is a big issue... the return teams and kickoff coverage. Opponents have had much better field position all season. That is a big part of not putting it all together. The other biggest issues have been turnovers on offense and giving up big plays on defense, and the dropsies by the WRs to a lesser extent.

My brother and I used to play football on his PS2. If things got too adversarial, we'd play Elon vs. Richmond just so whoever lost had a good excuse.

7-7 Southern Miss scored after a good punt return. Early it appears Charlotte may be able to run on Southern Miss, while they appear to be able to move it through the air.
