3-5 point favorite is pretty close on paper. 8.5 is not. However, as you are well aware (2014), on paper doesn't always count for much.

Homefield adv. is 3pts, So Vegas views ODU as 3-5 pt favorite. The game open as 6pt, and anything around touchdown favorite (1 score game) at home I would consider close. I agree paper doesn't count for much at all.

Just thought someone saying this game is not close "on paper" is odd considering this game is close on paper. Touchdown fav at home, similiar sagarin rankings, both teams have not beat winning teams yet. Marshall has played the tougher schedule (this year), but has also had some losses to bad teams so the edge would go to ODU for not losing to any bad teams, yet

8.5 minus 3 = 5.5 points on a neutral field is fairly significant. It implies ODU would be roughly a FG favorite on the road to Marshall.

Marshall lost at home to a team ODU beat 52-17 on the road.

I mean, I get your schtick. I really do and it amuses me at times. But, come up with reasonable material.

I disagree considering college teams today are regularly putting up 60pts and 600 yards of offense, a 1 score game is nothing. If we were still playing in the 1950's you might have a point. Good luck to you

It's alright - he can talk a big game until we finally get to play LT again and wipe the floor with them on the hardwood. Funny how he talks and talks all year and then disappears immediately after we play every year. Guess those beatings don't taste too good.

I guess it really is "what have you done for me lately?" 13 points vs. Marshall?

I'm cautiously optimistic, but that seems like a lot. (I was also cautiously optimistic against WKU, FWIW).

If I were not an ODU fan, I'd take Marshall and the points for anything +10 or higher. Marshall has killed us in the two previous games played, and we really have not "stepped up" in those games versus name competition since our FCS days (1st NCSU game, ECU, Pitt). Hope I'm wrong.....

My perception, and I could be totally wrong as I have no empirical data to support it, is that when we start to get "knocked" around physically, we withdraw and go "fetal".
In other words we seem not recover well from an initial bloody nose.

I wonder too if there is a degree of initial resignation by some units when confronted by larger opponents even before the game begins. That could even explain our sometimes slow starts. Total speculation on this one.

We are relatively young, and those things could be just a matter of youth and inexperience.

I wouldn't bet on ODU either, but this Marshall version is not NC State, ECU, or Pitt quality. It's not even LT (2014) or Rice (2014) quality.

Our history says we either win or get blown out. I'm leery of Marshall, but I don't expect them to come in and dominate us like they did 2 years ago.

Hell, we couldn't dominate a good high school team currently. If I were an ODU fan, I wouldn't have much of concern. The only way we can win is if you give us 4-5 turnovers. jmo.

RE: ***** Marshall @ Old Dominion *****
I'll say this for ODU: I don't recall the Monarchs ever losing a game that they had no business losing. They generally don't beat teams that they shouldn't, at least in FBS, and when they lose it's often bowling shoe-ugly, but they pretty much always hold serve. I can't find anything definitive, but I'll go out on a limb and say that ODU has never lost a game in which it was favored by double digits.

That said, history and a sense of "this can't be happening, can it?" makes me think that ODU is no sure thing, on-field results this season be damned.

Obviously, we will lose games we are favored in the future. I can remember losing to Villanova.

However, since we moved up, we have lost possibly 1 game we were even favored in:

MTSU* asterisk bc it was borderline -1 to +1

FIU
Eastern Mich
Hampton

UTEP
Charlotte
Norfolk State
Eastern Michigan

UTEP
UMASS
Charlotte
UTSA
Hampton

are the only games we have been favored in.

ODU is 13-1 as a favorite since 2013. Marshall is 0-6 as an underdog over the same timeframe.

The first time we played Marshall as an underweight and lack of FBS experience team they whooped us. BW sit on them! They cant run the ball and with our antirun defense, take full advantage!!

But I actually felt we had a good shot in that game. We were rolling at the time. The first half of Brohm's first season he was feeling things out but the second half he and Brandon Stratomatic Doughty were clicking.

That was a lonely day for punters.

I'll take a lot out of how ODU plays Marshall this Saturday in re our chances up there. Hell......I might even go to the Marshall game this time. I was at work listening to it on the radio 2 years ago. I'm retired now and there's nothing stopping me from going other than me. If ODU gives Marshall a game I'll feel better because to be honest ODU looked like a middle school team against us.
Every school has down years. We have never gone 2 and 10 when making the FBS jump like some team here talking smack and whos mascot looks like a giant red buttplug with legs...

No need to say it twice Cletus. We beat the dogshittt out of you. And then whooped your asssses on the sidelines when your boys were throwing tantrums over getting beat on so bad. And then listened to your coach and fans cry all night about it.

Tell you what. Come back and talk to me when you do what had never been done before in this conference. Run the table AND win the CCG. 12 wins. Top 25 ranking. Go ahead and puff out your little bird chest when you beat on the conference bottoms but let 2 Saturday nights ago ring in your head whenever you mistakenly believe you're ready to handle the big boys of the conference.

Now get on back to middle school practice and work on the dive play. Next week you can add a 'Man in Motion'....lol

My apologies banker. I had actually offered up a compliment to both Marshall and also ODU in the thread. I had said I was kinda worried about Marshall. I take no win for granted no matter what the spread is. I was worried last weekend about FAU. They always give us fits. I'm worried about FIU. They gave Middle all they wanted.

I congratulated ODU on becoming bowl eligible if they do.

Then Cletus from Tidewater gets on here talking smack. Insulting the best known mascot in the conference and one of the most famous in the country. I knew he was just a kid from his screen name but when someone swings on you, sometimes you gotta swing back.

Back on point. I'm very interested in the outcome of this game. Hell, I don't post much other than the music thread. I posted a bunch this morning because I didn't want to get started on my basement reno I'm doing.
