RE: ***** Marshall @ Old Dominion *****
The reason we were successful in the MAC is that we had better athletes, facilities and our coaches were very good. Our offenses were more wide open as well. We caught the MAC at a time that league was stagnant and we had a running start. It wasn't until 2003 and 2004 that most MAC teams had adjusted and caught up, if they had.

Now, are middle of the pack financially. We still have excellent facilities but poor coaching and poor recruiting decisions have cost us dearly.

On paper, this should be a relatively easy win at home.
On paper.

If you believe in the "cycle", then Marshal should be down; 2012 being their worst recruiting class (Rivals) in recent memory. (they have been much better since)

This Marshall offense does not remotely resemble the one led by Rakeem Cato. It will show multiple sets but.....
This season the Marshall rushing game is nothing short of abysmal, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry and it has gotten worse over the course of the season
QB Chase Litton has a 62% completion rate, and is averaging 7.8 yards per attempt.
He has thrown a whopping 7 INTs.
Marshall's 4-3 defense has been equal opportunity Swiss cheese, with a slight edge given to their rushing D.

The ODU offense is very capable with both run and pass, determined game to game by the health of a banged up OL. We have three big receivers, two great RBs and a good mobile QB.
The ODU defense is better (lately) vs the pass. The Dline has surprisingly struggled as of late, especially against the run.

While the USM/Marshall score was fairly close, the statistics were not.

One paper this game is not close......however the Herd is still loaded with talent. At some point they could have a breakout game. I hope it is not against us.

I think you have it switched. On paper this is a close competitive game but on the field maybe not. Marshall is #123 and ODU is #114 in Sagarin. ODU open as 6 pt favorite with 3 pts being home field so basically a 3 pt fav. Definitely close on paper

I expect a good game, but it's still Marshall. It will either be a close Monarch victory or a MU blowout. ODU has struggled with teams that have bigger/stronger players, and I remember the size difference in players two years ago in Norfolk. It wasn't even close at that point. The stadium should be going crazy if ODU gives the fans something to cheer about though.

Some people said a previous post of mine was all about drama. If they knew the situation they would feel differently. I don't see us being relevant in CUSA football for a very long time.

We finish 2-10 this year. Possibly a bit better in 2017. We have to have a major overhaul in player personnel and on the offensive coaching staff side. jmo.

Marshall has the second smallest enrollment of any public university in D1 football. We are located in one of the poorest areas of the country with an aging and declining population. It's amazing we have done what we've done.

Just off the top of my head Tech and ULM both have smaller enrollments but I understand the sentiment. Tech is in the same boat in Louisiana.

Im guessing you are just trolling? BTW, ODU opened as 8.5 point favorites in nearly every book.

Are you able to articulate how they are "close on paper," outside of using pitiful Jeff Sagarin rankings?

P.S., I'm scared to death of Marshall. We have never played well vs. them.

Can't wait for the CUSA rankings where he has us rated 12th in the conference with 1 conference loss.

Ubersensitive? No not at all. Vegas insider ODU open as 6 pt fav, go look it up. The Sargarin seems pretty accurate with the conference, you have the top, Tech WKU MTSU and USM. Huge gap, then middle of the pack teams such as ODU, UTSA, UNT, Marshall. You don't think 35-0 in the first quarter is huge disparity? On paper this is a close game

Even though we should probably be favored in our last few games I've had a gnawing in the pit of my stomach over our season finale at Marshall. Nothing they'd love more than to knock us out of a CCG. Two years ago nobody and I mean NOBODY gave us a chance against Cato and Company. Rightfully so on paper. But I actually felt we had a good shot in that game. We were rolling at the time. The first half of Brohm's first season he was feeling things out but the second half he and Brandon Stratomatic Doughty were clicking.

That was a lonely day for punters.

I'll take a lot out of how ODU plays Marshall this Saturday in re our chances up there. Hell......I might even go to the Marshall game this time. I was at work listening to it on the radio 2 years ago. I'm retired now and there's nothing stopping me from going other than me. If ODU gives Marshall a game I'll feel better because to be honest ODU looked like a middle school team against us.

6, 7, 8 doesnt really matter. 3-5 point favorite is close on paper. Sorry if you're upset about it, it is what it is.

Vegasinsiders.com is not a sportsbook, is it?

3-5 point favorite is pretty close on paper. 8.5 is not. However, as you are well aware (2014), on paper doesn't always count for much.

Exactly. 3-5 is close on paper. 6 and above is not.
As I stated originally, this game, on paper, is not close. I based it on statiistics and common opponents, but you have reinforced that with the published odds.

I'll take that as a compliment, because, frankly, we did not look that good. However, I would not judge your chances at Marshall based on how the Monarchs do against them this week. I suspect that they will be highly motivated against you guys in the last game of the year.

I'm happy for you guys to bounce back this weekend. That was impressive. Would be even happier for you guys to get your first bowl game. We lost our coach (Willie Taggart) and then lost our first bowl game. But the Western faithful drove through a blizzard to Detroit Rock City for our first bowl game. I couldn't go because of my work but my son and his wife drove through hella snow to get up there. We actually had a shot to win the game on a last second play but Kawaun Jakes did what he did best....he Kawaun Jaked it!!!

Good luck against Marshall.

Marshall has crushed us the past two years, especially 2014.

I'll hope for the win, and won't be shocked if ODU somehow loses. Go Monarchs!!
