ESPN has record losses this month.
ESPN lost 621,000 subscribers this month alone. Might not be good for contract talks.

They fleeced the Big 12 with 10 mill for the pro rata. How much did that save them?

They are a very profitable business. Don't kid yourself. They are just less of a monopoly than they were previous.

If they don't want to sew this up sooner than we'll just wait. No problem.

It's really up to them if they want to lock up the content with a reasonable offer. Regardless, the AAC now has a record to support its value that it can show around.

AAC is a bargain at double the price. With the P5, there is tremendous competition for broadcast rights, revenues are high, the price is high, and ESPN's margin is low. With the AAC, revenues are less but, I presume, margins are fabulous.

Dish Network's new flex package is likely a big contributor. ESPN is not in the basic service. Dish subscribers who don't care about sports can now avoid paying for those channels. Those that do like sports can add the sports channels for $10.

I think if we can get to the open market I honestly think we can get 60mil from fox and 60 from espn (chump change for both really) to split our tier 1 rights. I also think that we can get CBS sports to pay 60mil for all of our tier 2 rights plus some extra bball content. That's 15 million per team. I would then package our 3rd tier rights to a streaming service for maybe 1dollar a month subscription.

I'm staying at an RV park while working in Amarillo. And the local cable here does not have any of the ESPN channels

If you look at the tv ratings of the AAC games on the ESPN networks they are close to what they get for other leagues specially PAC games on same day, so they are getting a steal with our results

If you have internet....get a Sling subscription with the sports package for $25 a month. You can stream ESPN Channels on your computer or TV. You also get WatchESPN access. No contracts and you can cancel instantly online.

Our content is essentially free for ESPN

Truth. Anyone who thinks these "losses" actually threaten ESPN's status as a very profitable arm of Disney isn't looking at the big picture.

Yeah I'm using the watchespn app through my xbox. Thanks for the heads up though. I may check into that Sling subscription.

I wonder what they are counting for a lost subscriber? I dropped cable for the vue $35 dollar plan. I get the espn channels so I wonder if I'm considered "lost" subscriber? I hope these stupid conference channels crash and burn.

The vue is awesome by the way. You can dvr in the cloud. I purchased amazon fire tv to access it.

Thats right ^^^

Mike Aresco has plenty amo to go at it with tv networks now, anything between $$$8 million - $$$12 million for each member will be about right.

If Aresco gets $8-$12M, I will drive to the AAC offices and start building his statue myself.

Agree, I would love 8 to 12 million, but don't see it. Yes ESPN is still very profitable, but the projections and direction is bad, and not changing anytime soon.

If we do a deal now, I don't see us even close to that range. Unless it is an escalating deal that hits 6 to 8 the very last year. Odds could be better on the open market, but if the market continues as it is, what is that market going to look like in 3 years.

The Big 10 just got a 300% raise.

I think they'll see an up-tick if they can find a way to limit the sharing of logins. A lot of us cord-cutters are not throwing in. If they can pull a Netflix, and charge a reasonable price for the app-based programming (which is what I watch most of our games on), then they'll do much better.

I don't want to pay for cable. But I'd pay about $10 per month for all-access ESPN.

Whoops..

[Image: ae4c3b06e04de74b8bf0c472eaf6d79e0314280b...c4d9b2.jpg]

.Disney is now fighting back with Nielsen and now Nielsen said they will investigate/recalculate their Nov numbers...as Disney's case is that while they may have lost traditional subscribers to cable/sat tv...they've picked up many from MVPD, Multi-Channel Video Programming Distributers, i.e. other non-traditional services/devices that can pick up ESPN Networks.

Now as a stockholder, Disney doesn't receive the full price of $7 plus it gets from traditional cable/sat customers...but since Nielsen numbers are used to help set ad rates...Disney could be helped in that area if they show their total losses are negligible.

Here is the latest:
