So you'd rather play both of the FU's, Charlotte, & Old Dominion every single year? Keep in mind, we're playing East teams more than we should be right now because of the UAB situation.
West is down this year, but aside from Marshall, the East has about 20 years combined at the FBS/IA level. At least Rice, UTEP, and La Tech have some name value if nothing else. The only true noob in the West is UTSA. I've always thought we got the better end of that deal.
It's not about the quality of opponents. It's about the fact that we don't travel West of, say, Houston very well.

UTEP isn't in the same time zone and their stadium is also 4,000' above sea level. And being in the same time zone isn't everything. Birmingham and Atlanta are in different time zones. San Antonio and Birmingham are in the same time zone, but that's a 12-hour drive.

I barely consider 'almost mexico' as a member and we handled them this year (5-3 against them overall and 3-1 at their house)...and UAB won how many in a row until Monk finally beat them???? hmmmmmmmmm
yeah we've lost both to ootsa....but are 1-1 @ smwhoo and 1-0 @ UNT (we completely suck OOC west of whooston) *forgot about Tulsa - we're 0-3-1 at their joint.....what a pain in butt they were...

hell, it was the marsha and uab games that wrecked it in '11...
I see zero relevance.....road games are always tough....

And how well do you think we'd travel to Miami, Boca Raton, and Norfolk? Stink has already pointed out we're closer to most of the West than most of the East.
Also, keep in mind this post started with the suggestion that a conference of Ohio & Michigan schools was an option.

If the difference in travel time is a figment of my imagination, then so be it. It's not something I've studied scientifically.
The fact that people started talking about the MAC is exactly why I tried to re-inject travel distance into the equation. I don't want to say we wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell winning consistently on the road in the MAC, because that would be a demoralizing and speculative thing to say, but at the same time I fear that too much travel wears us down, and that's going to be a problem for us in any Go5 conference except the Slum Belch.
