Malloy Reached Out To ESPN On Behalf Of UConn In Big 12 Expansion Debate
Quote:Gov. Dannel P. Malloy reached out to ESPN to push for support of UConn's bid to gain entrance into the Big 12 Conference before the league decided not to expand.

"The governor is very supportive of UConn, the state's flagship university," Kelly Donnelly, Malloy's chief spokesman, said Thursday. "Likewise, he's very supportive of ESPN, an acclaimed company and major employer in Connecticut.

"The governor did speak with John Skipper, president of ESPN, and just as he did in a letter to Big 12 commissioner [Bob] Bowlsby, explained that UConn's strong academic and athletic program would make it an incredible asset to the Big 12."

Skipper then called Bowlsby, according to a source, and while maintaining the position that ESPN preferred no expansion, told the Big 12 commissioner if the league did add teams, that as corporate citizens in Connecticut, ESPN would appreciate that UConn be given all due consideration.

After months of uncertainty, the conference decided Oct. 17 not to expand.

ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys declined comment except to say, "We have a productive relationship with Gov. Malloy and the state of Connecticut."

ESPN, 80 percent owned by Disney, did not believe the inventory gained by adding any of the potential candidates for expansion would be worth the extra $20 million per school per year it would have had to pay the Big 12 under a pro rata agreement struck in 2012. If the conference had expanded by four schools that would have meant at least $80 million a year to the Big 12 — the payments actually grow some — over the last eight years of the contract.

ESPN, according SportsBusiness Journal, has negotiated a $10 million deal with the Big 12 to eliminate the pro rata clause. Bowlsby denied the report, saying TV negotiations are still active. The Big 12 is negotiating the television terms of its re-instituted conference football championship game. This does not mean the Big 12 cannot expand. Fox, which also has the pro rata clause in its contract, reportedly has not negotiated such a settlement with the Big 12.

In 2011, Malloy announced that ESPN was receiving development incentive money from the state as part of the "First Five" program for further construction at its Bristol headquarters. ESPN is expected to collect $10 million in tax credits. That's instead of the $20 million-plus package of grants, tax abatements and a large loan, much of it forgivable, that originally was announced in 2011.

Malloy also reached out to Bowlsby by letter, which was included in UConn's presentation to the Big 12 as it was considering expansion.

The letter, dated Sept. 1, in part said, "Connecticut has a record of delivering championship-level play whenever we invest in a team. More than a decade ago, when it was the right time to further develop our football program, the State of Connecticut was there to build a stadium. More recently, the State championed UConn Hockey's quest to join Hockey East investing in crucial facility upgrades, and already the Huskies are a competitive team with tremendous fan support. In the first year of Hockey East play, UConn enjoyed the largest average attendance of any conference school.

"Today, we again stand ready to make the necessary investments to support the Huskies and the exceptional teams and fans of the Big 12. There is no doubt that UConn will have the full backing of the state of Connecticut, and the resources necessary to compete as a successful member of the Big 12 if an invitation is extended."

Trying to be a football school certainly didn't help Big River any in the last go-round, getting cut in the same round as the Sun Belt schools and all.....

Keep holding onto that basketball school mantra 07-coffee3

Big talk from a Group B school. You think they'd just be happy getting saved from the 200k/year they'd otherwise be worth.

Is "Memphis carries some sort of weight" kind of like "Memphis is still under consideration by the Big 12"? If you say it enough maybe people will believe it?

Middle Tennessee State to the AAC
Add Boise, WMU, and Army to the west, add USM to the east, and move Memphis to the east.

If BSU joins the AAC? I see BYU, AF coming with them. Then maybe Army would make sense and have all 3 SA's in the league.
