About the only reason anyone would want to join the WAC would be if the WAC announced that Chicago St was dropping sports, UMKC sobered up and and decided to go to the Summit, and that Utah Valley, Grand Canyon, UTRGV, and Cal St-Bakersfield were all starting football. Even then, I don't see anyone in the Big Sky jumping to get on board that train, just Ambitous D2 schools.

IIRC, if the WAC lost Chicago State and UMKC (no idea why they want to be in the WAC instead of the Summit), the WAC would lose its autobids because they would fall below 7 teams. Unless they could find a fully transitioned D1 team to join.

I think there would be a grace period before they lost their autobid

There might be one....but the WAC has been given so many waivers that one might think....its time to just stop saving it. Let Seattle and Utah Valley go to the Big Sky, let UMKC and NMSU go to the Summit. Let UTRGV go to the Southland. Let UC-Bakersfield go to the Big West. Let Chicago State drop sports. Let Grand Canyon go away (for profits don't belong in the NCAA). If the teams can't find a home, then let the WAC attempt to exist in some sort of Great West Conference limbo until they get 7 teams again.

The grace period is not permission to apply for a waiver, it's automatic.

However, it's only two years, and it takes at least four years to reclassify from Div2 to full Active status in Div1. I don't know how that sorts out.

They already changed the continuity rule ~ in a semantic game which I cannot really fathom, but then IANDL ~ in order to save the WAC. If they again find themselves in a situation where they need a rule change to survive, I doubt I'd be in favor.

Southland Conference would accept Angelo State, Central Oklahoma, Arkansas Tech and Delta State in a heartbeat. Texas A&M-CC and New Orleans could move over to the WAC to make room. Those 2 with UTRGV could launch football there to revive football at the FCS level.

David

No one in their right mind would leave any conference to go to the WAC right now. No one. UNO isn't leaving the Southland. Neither is TAMU-CC. The Southland is kind of full right now. And UTRGV is on the "we'd like to join list".

Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F Austin all have eyes for FBS. New Mexico State could try and restart an FBS WAC conference. UTRGV wants FBS as well. West Texas A&M is building a brand new on campus football stadium that can expand to 22,500. I think they are eying FBS as well. Grand Canyon U. and Utah Valley have been thinking of adding football. That would be 8. Wichita State, Missouri State and Northern Iowa could be 11, and the three MVFC Dakotas schools could join as well. That is 14. Chicago State could go to the Summit and and UMKC could go to the MVC. Bakersfield State could use Bakersfield Memorial Stadium for football if they add the sport. It is a 20,000 seat stadium that is used by Bakersfield College.

Defunct college football teams.

This is from the Mississippi River westward that dropped football. Wonder where they all be today if they kept football, and stayed in D1 for most of them?

Cal-San Diego, West Texas A&M and some others may need a landing spot to go to. GNAC is now down to 5 football playing members as the RMAC grabbed South Dakota Mines and Dixie State. Lone Star Conference is now bloated just like the southland as they grabbed the New Mexico schools and UTPB added football this year. More Texas schools are thinking of adding football, and Rogers State in Oklahoma could add one to. D2 is getting bloated in the south plains for football right now.

A small problem with all that as those respective conferences don't want those WAC schools.
