Remember when Jesse Jackson had a fit about the Braves not having any black Americans (even though they had black players from the Caribbean)?

Then no, Mach.. your classroom is not a place for this then.

If you want a teacher-student conference for it, that's one thing.

But then you throw up some ridiculous comment like this:

Quote:Don't you have a problem with Trump supporters finding you not worthy of being in this country? We should build a wall because Hispanics are taking away jobs from Americans.

NO, no, no... Good grief, what will it take to get in through the thick-skulls of people. If they come to the country LEGALLY... NO PROBLEM!

I get the legality part but would this kid have said that if the guy was of European descent? Would a Make America great crowd say the same thing to Dirk Nowitzki? That's the part you guys miss and yes there is the racial element to it. I didn't hear anything close to this with Omar Vizquel in the 90's. If you guys can't see the closet racists amongst you.

1. You are either racist yourself or

2. You are blind to party ideology. The GOP is making enemies of Latinos or making them feel like 2nd class citizens.... and

3. Who in the hell are you to question someone's legal stranding? It does remind me of the Nazi's checking people's papers. It's a crazy time.

77% of Latinos have a negative view of Trump. 12% favorable. The 12% must be the ones who are attracted to this place.

As someone else said, Perez looks pretty heavily European descent. How do you know he wouldn't have said it with an Eastern European with an accent? Sounds like you are the one being prejudiced.

Unfortunately, Trump has caused a lot of closet racist to come out from under their rocks and think it's okay to start being racist again. This is why it is so important for Trump supporters to accept it when they lose. They must reevaluate their morals and realize that the America they wish they had no longer exists.

That was a teachable moment but now that it has passed just let it go.

The epitome of hypocrisy. Feet talks about racism and he directs it to us. He talks about immorality and he directs it to us. He realizes that the America that used to be great isn't anymore and he blames it on us.

Yep, that's a Clinton supporter.

bullet,

because I am a fair an open minded person I will take your post into sugestion. I do think it was because of his hispanic accent though and like I said earlier you NEVER heard this type of talk in the 90's. Those teams were worshipped. Not here though.

I'm just glad that the teachers in my son's school stick to teaching rather than trying to force their political beliefs on their students like they are evidently free to do in El Paso and Ohio. That crap wouldn't fly in our school district.

This morning is the first time I could see how a Hitler could come to power. There is a hatred brewing and racial lines are being drawn. Keep your head in the sand and let the fascists speak for you. This is beyond crazy and the vast majority of posts call this bs.

1. This happened.

2. No one has given me advice worth anything.

3. I'm still holding out hope someone from the right can give good advice here.

4. I teach science but this is one of those cross curricular events. You can't let racial stuff like that pass. I just want good advice.

First, 'foreigner' isn't a race. As a science teacher, you know this. PART of the good advice would be to not treat it as if its about his 'race'. Racism is one of those 'aces' that ends every discussion and starts an argument. Even if comments about race were made, the gist of it is that he isn't an AMERICAN, which can be of literally any race. That's a good teaching moment.

Second, I do agree with others (at least my interpretation of what they're saying) that any 'correction' is best when given in appropriate context. If my English teacher started telling me about evolution, I'd be suspicious.

What I would do (with a background in finance) would be to focus on the economics of baseball/sports... and how despite not being born here, his ascension to reach this level shows how a game INVENTED by Americans has international appeal.... and while it MAY take a job away from an American citizen, he came here legally and pays taxes and it also creates a job for someone to teach him English or be his international lawyer. Building a wall wouldn't stop this sort of thing, nor should it. People who come to this country through the proper channels, whatever those were at the time (and they do change over centuries) and contribute to the open economy are part of what built this country and makes it the envy of most others... It's why they play baseball in the DR. I'd also remind him that because this player from the DR is in the world series, there are people in the DR right now watching the game... seeing him wear nike's or drink gatorade or watch the Miller commercial who then ALSO contribute to our economy in a way that someone from Florida would not.

Essentially telling him that the issue of LEGAL immigration is far more complex than he's letting it be... EVEN IF his point about securing the border CAN be very simple.

Illegal immigration is one thing. Legal immigration is another. Learn the difference and why especially 'performers' can grow the financial pie in the US, which ultimately benefits us.

My son is a performer who speaks decent German, and he's seriously considering a gig in Germany because they value people who sing American songs with true American accents.... hard to get the emotion of a song if you really don't know what the words mean.

Making someone else feel uncomfortable isn't a good or bad thing in and of itself.

For example, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, I'm sure that make some people uncomfortable, which led to her arrest.

I don't think you can look at everything said in your classroom through the lens of does this make one person uncomfortable. I dislike Trump, but what he says isn't wrong because it makes anyone uncomfortable. And, I don't know that if you had said something to the group (which you did not do) would have been correct. I don't think that is your place. You could declare your classroom a politics free zone. Or, you could have engaged that kid, in front of the others, and discussed what he said, without advocating the opposite viewpoint, which I believe you hold.

RE: This happened in my room this morning.
Thanks Hambone. Good advice. I already mentioned above how I handled it. Just talked to him but it fell on deaf ears. He thought I was lecturing him on talking in front of minorities.

I'm to the point now, for the few GOPers left that have some core beliefs left, I want to show them how utterly destructive Trump's campaign has been. The racist bullies are back and back in force. That's the code word for Trump speaking about what needs to be talked about. The anti PC crap. It's truly bad. People think it's ok to question a minority if they really belong here. Really? It's a scary time in America and I'm going to speak out on it. I'm embarrassed for many of you.
