As long as spiders don't come into the house, I am fine with them. They kill other bugs.

RE: OT: Giant mouse-eating spider
I ran a Pharma supply company in Bulimba, Queensland, Australia for a few years. Bulimba is a suburb of Brisbane, so it isn't out in the bush.

When I made my reservations on my 1st trip to open the facility, I stayed at what was called "the best hotel in town." After check-in I get to my room, put my luggage on the bed and try to find a way to climb up to turn on the A/C that's up near the ceiling on the wall.

As I am climbing up something buzzes by my head that sounds like an Apache Helicopter. As I am reaching for my bag I see this winged bug about 8" long crawling on the bed.

I grabbed my bag went directly to the desk and told the lady I was checking out. I would pay for the night but I wasn't sleeping in a room with bugs that big flying around. She probably still tells her friends about the Bloody Yank that left in a hurry.

I left in a Taxi and told the driver to take me to the nicest hotel in Brisbane. I never stayed outside of Brisbane in all my trips Downunder.

Side note...we did run a room and contents fire once because a woman thought that it would be a good idea to kill palmetto bugs (think of a cockroach on steroids) with a Bic lighter and a can of hairspray.

I used the same thing to burn out a nest of black widows living underneath my hooch in Iraq. Worked like a charm. Of course I wouldn't have used them inside the hooch where something could catch fire. I did have my wife send me weather stripping and caulk to keep things out.

Claim: Photograph shows camel spiders found in Iraq.
Status: Real picture; inaccurate description.

Although the creatures shown in the photograph above appear to be far too big for camel spiders, they look misleadingly large because of their closeness to the camera, which creates an illusion of exaggerated size. (Note their size in comparison to the uniform sleeve which appears in upper right-hand portion of the picture.)

BTW, if you guys are using Snopes.com to debunk internet rumors, why not?
Definitely one of the most "useful" sites on the internet (sort of)

Yea, that is deceptive. Camel spiders only get to about half the size of a normal man's hand. Which is to say they are still too damn big! Camel Spiders and Tarantulas don't bother me as much as Brown Recluse and Black Widows. The first two are big and scary. The last two are small and venomous. They will mess you up.

This isn't a spider but it sure looks the part - a giant coconut crab. It is the largest terrestrial crab in the world and can live as long as 60 years. Oh, it also climbs!

About 10 to 12 years ago, I watched a documentary that discussed a native people in the jungles of South America. The people would catch tarantulas and wrap them in giant leaves and cook them over an open fire like a rotisserie. They would then use the fangs like toothpicks to clean their teeth. But the narrator said something that impacted my eating habits til this day. He said that tarantulas are the land equivalent to lobsters and that the meat texture is very similar. That was good enough for me to never eat lobster again. And since crabs look more like spiders than lobsters, Goodbye to both lobster and crabs!
