Remaining Undefeated, 1-Loss, and Winless Teams Before Week 9
Teams with 1st Loss Week 8: 2
Texas A&M
Ohio State

Teams with 2nd Loss Week 8:
3
South Florida
Houston
Memphis

Teams with 1st Win Week 8:
1
Rice

Percent of Teams with 1st loss:

Week 1: 34.38% (44 of 128)
Week 2: 42.85% (36 of 84)
Week 3: 20.92% (11 of 48)
Week 4: 27.03% (10 of 37)
Week 5: 42.31% (11 of 27)
Week 6: 31.25% (5 of 16)
Week 7: 0% (0 of 11)
Week 8: 18.18% (2 of 11)

Maximum number of undefeated teams:
7
-Michigan/Nebraska, Alabama, Washington, Clemson, Baylor/West Virginia, Western Michigan, Boise State

Week 8 Thoughts:

-Lots of interesting stuff this week. Let’s start with the thing no one is reporting. With Rice’s win this week, we now have no teams left in the bowl subdivision without a win. Without looking back this seems fairly early in the year to be here and many times we end up with a team who doesn’t win at all.

-It is very possible that the game Saturday between Alabama and Texas A&M was our last game between undefeated teams for the regular season and possibly for the whole year. Our only 2 remaining possibilities in the regular season are Baylor at West Virginia in their season finale (December 3rd) and a Big Ten Championship match-up between Nebraska and Michigan (also December 3rd). Odds are that at least one team in both those possible match-ups will lose a game before then.

-Ohio State’s loss will be easier for them to recover from than Texas A&M. The reason being the divisional positions. Ohio State will win a 3 way tie-breaker if they win out and Michigan wins out until the OSU/Michigan game. Ohio State will be OK with an earlier Michigan loss if Penn State losses one more as well. They’d still need a little more help in the Fiesta/Peach Bowl race, but much less of it than if they aren’t playing in Indianapolis. Texas A&M is going to have a harder time coming back unfortunately due to Alabama still being undefeated.

-All 3 of our 1 loss teams that lost this week were from the American. Houston loosing was the biggest shocker as SMU almost covered the spread in reverse. The conference’s chances at the Cotton Bowl now rests primarily on Navy’s back.

-With the above said, don’t dismiss the idea of a 2-loss team being the team in the Cotton. We don’t really need that much more to happen to put a 2-loss team in. This is especially true when you consider a) that losing a conference championship game disqualifies you (conference champs only) and b) the committee will have a far easier time than the polls taking a 2 loss team in over a 1 loss team.

Week 9 Thoughts:
Games involving undefeated and 1-loss teams: undefeated Washington playing at 1-loss Utah, undefeated Nebraska at Wisconsin, undefeated Clemson at Florida State, Ohio University at 1-loss Toledo, 1-loss Navy at South Florida, 1-loss San Diego State at Utah State, 1-loss Louisville at Virginia, undefeated West Virginia at Oklahoma State, undefeated Michigan at Michigan State, 1-loss Florida at Georgia, undefeated Baylor at Texas, Northwestern at 1-loss Ohio State, undefeated Boise State at Wyoming, and New Mexico State at 1 loss Texas A&M.

Remaining Undefeated Teams:
ACC: 1, Big 12: 2, Big Ten: 2, MAC: 1, Mountain West: 1, PAC-12: 1, SEC: 1, total: 9

Clemson
Nebraska
Baylor
West Virginia
Michigan
Western Michigan
Washington
Alabama
Boise State

1-Loss Teams: ACC: 1, American: 1, Big 12: 0, Big Ten: 1, MAC: 1, Mountain West: 1, PAC-12: 1, SEC: 2, Sun Belt: 1, Total: 9

Troy
Florida
Toledo
Navy
Utah
San Diego State
Louisville
Texas A&M
Ohio State

Remaining Winless Teams: Conference USA: 0, total: 0

If Alabama loses and the rest of the P5 win out, lets say Michigan, Clemson, Washington & Baylor. Do the SEC get left out of the Playoff and does that bang the drum for an 8-team Playoff? I think we're going to eventually get to an 8-team playoff, you'll have the P5 auto-bids, Top G5 Conference Champion auto-bid and 2 Wild Cards. It still makes all the College Football games important and you can still have that argument of who got left out of the 2 Wild Card spots. College Football has a good system setup at the moment.

I do not think there is anything that can happen short term to bring an 8 team playoff and I am happy about that as I think it would seriously lessen my interest in my most other conferences (a loss in other conferences just won't matter as much).

That said, I would be shocked if we had 4 teams unbeaten from power 5 conferences (since the start of the BCS we have only had 3 twice and that was with the Big East around for one of them). The committee might still opt to Alabama in in those cases.

Do people still not understand that "who gets left out" is a huge driver of interest in P5 football on a national (rather than regional) basis. Expansion to 8 would kill interest AND VIEWERSHIP in out of region games.

If you're going to add an extra week to the schedule, there are options that are WAY better for viewership numbers than expanding the playoff. Splitting the conferences into 3 divisions, adding a CCG semifinal with a wildcard spot, and reducing conference games/increasing the number of OOC games is the way to go.

The system you just described is inevitable, I think all it takes for that to happen is for an unbeaten power five to get left out or several unbeaten G5 schools with decent resumes getting left at home.

Eig would be perfect and in no way diminishes the regular season, IMO
