$10M total, once. That whole show was over a one time payment of $1M per team.

ESPN will also overpay for the conference championship game to help offset the money "lost" by not expanding.

RE: ESPN pays Big12 $10m to remove pro rata clause
Does removing this clause mean that if they expand, they can't get more TV money and have to divide further the current TV monies?

So if this was a "cash grab", it was the measley tune of $1M per team spread out over the next 8 years or so (whenever the current deal expires)?

I know this makes the B12 look even more ridiculous, but c'mon, nobody is that stoopid. I'm curious if this is right, or if the B12 is really that deluded that they are actually stronger with only 10 teams.

Now there's this:

Quote:Dennis Dodd

Bowlsby shoots down SBJ report re pro rata. “I don’t know where they get that stuff.” Says negotiations with TV partners ongoing.

So who knows. It is interesting that Fox won't pay anything to eliminate the pro-rata. It was rumored they were for expansion, if it included going east into markets they weren't in (like FL).

Contrary to comments made last week, Bob Bowlsby says "there was a lot of discussions" about the individual candidates by Big 12 presidents.

Well now that espn bought out of the pro rata clause, Fox doesn't have to pay anything. Big 12 isn't going to expand and lose money from half the deal.

Fox definitely is smarter than ESPN right now. ESPN got played like a bunch of rookies.

The Big12 makes the old BigEast look good...smh.

Really? All this for $1-million per team?

Reminds me of that $1 bet Duke's brother bet in that 1980s classic Eddie Murphy comedy, Trading Places:

Not really...

ESPN basically paid nuisance money to make this whole thing go away and gain cost certainty in the process. If the reports are true...paying $10 versus $40-$50-million/year over the next 7 years makes a lot of business sense. Hopefully some of that money they save finds its way into our TV deal.

Amazing! Fox is the real winner. They pay nothing unless the Big12 pulls this stunt again - which is unlikely to happen and, if it does, Fox can always agree to pay a settlement amount at that time.

One presumes that some lawyer/law firm for ESPN has been fired for messing up the Big12 contract. The $10M is a settlement price for the foul up.

Houston and Cinci need to add a new course to their MBA programs called "The Unwitting Stalking Horse - How to Identify When You Are Being Used".

$30 million for the Big XII CG is not an overpayment - that's just market rate for a marquee event.

$10 million for the Pro Rata buyout might be overpayment when you consider Fox paid $0.00 - plus, it looks like the Big XII couldn't agree on a pair of expansion candidates if their LIFE depended on it.

Or they could just follow Dr. Rudd and Memphis' leadership group's lead next time.

In all likelihood there are two separate contracts (ESPN and Fox). Supposedly ESPN paid to make that clause go away. We do not know what Fox has done to this point and it (pro rata) may all be cleaned up as part of the championship game contract. None of us are privy to these things.

You think? They got out of paying over a billion dollars extra for 4 new members joining (over the duration of the contract) and all for the puny amount of 10 million. ESPN didn't get played; instead one should say, "Well played, ESPN."

It's obvious espn still runs $h!t like ex lax.

Anyone who thinks the B12 err 10 really wants to expand is just fooling themselves. This whole act was to put pressure on the networks, it was a big bluff a cash grab of the worst sort. I am sure the networks didn't want to take any chances and paid off for clause elimination.
