We only lead the conference in several major defensive rushing categories including yards per play (2.77), rushing touchdowns (4), and yards per game (91.25). Statistically, it's the best sunbelt rushing defense, yards per game, in the last five years, but "Troy's run defense is not very good".
No SBC team since before 2008 has held conference opponents to 2.77 yards per play on the ground.
And outside of Clemson, which sparking run game did you play? South can't run, Georgia State didn't under manning and Idaho got down so big they had to pass. Southern Miss certainly isn't a run first team.
They're #1 in C-USA in rushing offense. Your argument falls flat. Let's be clear: a run defense that leads the conference, and is the best over an eight year span in yards per play can't be qualified as being "not very good". There's no way you could even know if we're good or not if (according to you) we haven't played anybody. By your own admission, you have no reference point.
You're wrong about Idaho, too. They ran more run plays than they did pass plays.

How do you figure? What games did you watch that lead you to believe that?
Troy is #14 in the nation in Run Defense... only allowed 124 rushing yards to Clemson and held their starting RB to only 34 total yards.
I'm not trying to say Troy is unbeatable, but the defense has undoubtedly been stout.

If we can't run the ball, we'll dust off our WRs. I hear they're supposed to be fast.

We also lead the SBC in sacks, interceptions, and pass efficiency defense according to the NCAA website. Chief pointed out last week how "bad" our pass defense is despite the above. I guess, according to cheif, we have a bad pass defense and a bad rush defense. We just must be really bad. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Well hell, now that we all know that, can't we just cancel the game with Troy and schedule Presbyterian instead since we have no hope of winning?

That would probably be in StAte's best interest at this point.

Saying Troy's unbeatable is one thing. Troy has a tough road ahead and probably won't get out unscathed. Saying Troy's pass defense and run defense aren't very good is just laughable. We're not as bad as Chief thinks, I promise.

I didn't say I think you're bad, I just see your defense as much like ours last year. Extremely aggressive, willing to give up the big play in exchange for gaining the big play. Knows the offense is capable of putting up 30 plus a game, so simply creates a defense predicated on giving the offense the ball back as quickly as possible.
If you turn the ball over against Troy...you lose. If you can't play turnover free ball, you've got a decent chance to win.

We'd lose to Presby. Nonconference game and all. Troy has a Sun Belt patch, so better chance at winning

He's actually right (though technically, so are you). They had 38 pass attempts to 32 actual rushing attempts (sacks are counted as rushes in college). There were 4 sacks that skew the rushing attempt stat. Also, if the QB scrambled and doesn't throw it, that's also a rush attempt.
Again, stats can be very misleading If not interpreted and used correctly. With that being said, Troy does have a very good rushing defense (one of the best we faced this year in the SBC). Ark State seemed a little bigger and faster in the front 7 than Troy (IMO only). I felt we had more success with the run game against Troy than Ark State. I would expect that matchup to be a battle of QBs. It would certainly be fun to watch.

This is where I remind everyone that the CBS sports 1-128, outside of the top 25, is meaningless and random.
