Vance McDonald/49ers
Vance has been getting an unwanted reputation as a pass-dropper. He just dropped another one ... a well-thrown ball, shoulder high on a shallow crossing pattern that clanked of both of his hands. Bummer!

A couple of plays later, Vance was targeted again, but Kaepernick was late in deciding. He threw it behind Vance, who was near the left sideline ... a Tampa DB stepped in front and picked it off.

Yes. He will not survive if he drops passes. He also fumbled after catching a pass. However, he still could be hurt and trying to protect his hip.

RE: Vance McDonald/49ers
McDonald dropped passes when he was at Rice, so why would he not drop them in the NFL? I remember one crossing route at Baylor which McHargue threw him and he was wide open for an easy first down. Clang! Of course McHargue's passes had their problems. Most were bullets, with zero touch.

Neither Joe Montana nor Steve Young are throwing to Vance.

RE: Vance McDonald/49ers
Vance McDonald just scored on an 18-yard pass with 4:56 left in the first half of the 49ers' home game against New England. It's McDonald's first target & catch of the game and his fourth TD reception of the year.

Kaepernick's throw was a little behind, but Vance turned back to catch it and then hauled the Patriot defender trying to tackle him into the end zone.

He also had a nice long catch and slide (in the 3rd? wasn't totally paying attention in the restaurant I was at). Got himself open and avoided a big hit from a safety.

Boswell had 3 FG's and an extra point today.

Willson also had some receptions.

And all of our DB's (Gaines, Sendejo and Callahan) all recorded multiple tackles per the boxscores of the games they played.

Interesting that with the rule change and weather yesterday 12 PAT's were missed in the NFL.

RE: Vance McDonald/49ers
Vance was mentioned positively in the pre-game TV packages ... but today's wet-blizzard game in Chicago was not a great one for him.

His holding penalty nullified a long 49ers run early in the game. He couldn't hold onto a couple of slightly underthrown balls thrown by both Kaepernick and Gabbert.

Bryce Callaghan covered him tightly on one crossing route and knocked away a well-thrown Kaepernick pass. Vance was wide open for another Kaepernick pass, but it was badly overthrown ... way out of reach.

Vance did catch two short passes: One on a third down in the first quarter ... but he was well covered and tackled before he could get the first down. The second was a shallow crossing pattern with 2 minutes left in the game and the DB hit him squarely on his right knee. He stayed down for a few seconds, felxing his knee. Hope he is OK.

(The Niners QBs ended up completing only 5 of 15 passes for a grand total of 5 yards!)

Great news for Vance:

NFL-dot-com Wrote:Vance McDonald just got an early Christmas present.

The 49ers have signed the tight end to a five-year extension through the 2021 season. The new deal is worth $35 million, a source informed told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

"Vance has shown consistent growth throughout his four-year career and his production this season is the result of his dedication and hard work," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "We believe he has only scratched the surface of what he will be able to accomplish in his career."

Here are links to articles in Bleacher Report and NinersWire/USAToday.

NinersWire Wrote:McDonald’s $7-million per season ranks 13th among tight ends, one spot ahead of Walker’s $6.7-million average with the Titans.

McDonald’s $16 million in guarantees is tied for third at the position. Buffalo’s Charles Clay ($24.5 million), Jacksonville’s Julius Thomas ($21 million) received more, according to Overthecap.com. McDonald’s guarantees are tied with Baltimore’s Dennis Pitta ($16 million).

Does this make the highest paid former Rice FB player ever? (at least until Callahan finishes his rookie contract)

RE: Vance McDonald/49ers
In the 2nd quarter of today's game with the Jets, McDonald went to the locker room with a shoulder injury. After halftime, the Niners announced that he would not play in 2H. Vance was not targeted in the first half.

It was not clear on the telecast of the play in which he was injured. I've not seen any replays of it mentioned or broadcast.

Looked like he was pulling/trapping to block on an inside run and hit his shoulder in the leg of the Jets Defensive Lineman. He went down immediately and was obviously in pain. Hope he gets better.

Has Vance joined the Owl Club? Seems like he could be a major donor.

Sendejo recently gave enough to get his name on the training room. Hopefully that is the start of a trend. I imagine we may have three to four more guys coming into some serious contracts in the next few years.
