New Coach?
The worst thing that ever happened to our program was the quick success we had in FCS. Building a program at this level doesn't happen in three recruiting classes, especially given our facilities.

Frankly, if we get six or seven wins this year and make a bowl, I think that's fair progress. If we're not competing for the conference championship three years from now, then, I'll start getting concerned. For now, I'll just be a bit bummed when days like yesterday happen.

RE: New Coach?
I love your optimism Coach and your expectations are probably realistic. One thing that gets overlooked in these discussions, in my opinion is the huge gap between lower and upper level teams in CUSA. We may be one of the better lower tier teams, and that may represent real PROGRESS FOR NOW. We are not remotely competitive in the upper tier. Not in CUSA and certainly not any other conference. Only time (3 years?) will tell if BW is able to guide this team to the higher tier. In the mean time, being the best lower tier team in the worst conference in the G5 is like being the worlds tallest midget. In these watered down days of meaningless bowl games between mediocre teams, maybe a bowl game will help our rep and thus recruiting.
If I can keep my expectations in line with our (lack of) talent, being a roughly .500 team will have to do for now.

Having said all that, If I were Selig, I'd tell Wilder the next time he calls some half assed bush league "surprise" play, he's fired.

RE: New Coach?
What I think we need is a positive attitude by coaching staff as well. Instead of saying things like these to players " it's their home coming", it's a tough place to play", "this game is going to go on a wire", " we need to keep an eye out" etc, we need more of a positive attitude approach. More like " Hey X, lets show them what you got", "Let's squash those guys", " Bring it on" etc. So basically it's a half time speech but during all week. If you bring up speeches like "it's going to be a tough place to play and that why we have to practice hard" will just make the player think about those issues that can cause harm mentally.

It's just not good enough and it's not getting better. No major defensive recruiting wins, no adjustments, nothing......just getting crushed against any half way decent team.

52 points in a HALF against a good but not great cusa team is completely unacceptable in our third year in CUSA and 4th at the FBS level.

Bobby needs to hire real coordinators and wood need to pay good money to get them or they BOTH need to go and we need to clean house.

If we are going to try and be a "football school" we need a football coach. Wilder was a hell of a salesman for getting the program started and into fbs but he's being exposed against real teams.

The fake punts and onside kicks don't work against real fbs football teams. The trickery doesn't work, the defense is abysmal and the flaws that Heinecke covered are now being exposed.

I do not believe bobby is a next level FBS coach. Love the guy, he's been amazing for odu, wouldn't even mind a wilder statue one day for everything he did for selling the program and getting us into FBS.......but if we want to win at this level, we need someone who can recruit better, can build a defense and for Christ's sake, doesn't go for a fake punt on his own 30 down 14 in the first F'ing quarter.

The Mickey Mouse BS is not acceptable if we want to be a real FBS power.

It pains me to say that I agree with everything written here. Except perhaps your opinion on Wood Selig. But truthfully I haven't really thought about it. The question is, what is the buy on Wilders contract? I seem to remember a 10 year contract extension at one time. Although we were FCS at that time. I wonder if the move up perhaps changed the terms of that contract?

We had a year head start on App St and Ga. Southern and they're as good or better than WKU/MTSU/USM. Cant believe even lowly Ga St. beat us to a bowl game. So. Alabama is pretty decent too.

Sure, that's realistic.

FBS power may be a bit much.

Being a redheaded step child for any decent cusa offense is unacceptable.

There are NUMEROUS examples of teams moving up to FBS and having success right away.

Ga southern, app state, south Florida......don't act like it can't be done.

We have a great fanbase, financial support, a solid conference and a tremendous recruiting pipeline in our own backyard.

Success is there to be had, the question is, do we currently have the men in charge who can get us there?

Bobby Wilder is guaranteed $1 million to 1.8 million in revenue if he is terminated without cause. Wilder make around $550,000

Indeed our meteoric rise to prominence didn't help, but neither has the hype.
BW stated last year that our goals were to go to a bowl and compete for the division championship.
This year we were to go to a bowl and compete for the Conference championship.
Lofty goals to be sure, but perhaps a bit unrealistic.
The same unrealistic hype surrounded Shuler Bentley.
It is usually better to under promise and over deliver than the reverse.

I think a problem some are having, and one I am wrestling with as well, is that we don't seem to be building. We have not beaten a team with a winning
record in 21 games now.
Worse, we have not been close since 2014.
It could be argued that we are not one iota better than last season, save for better play at QB, and certainly not as good as 2014. I am not sure, only time will tell.

We are two years removed from the 2014 offense which was overwhelmingly made up of FCS personnel. That offense was good enough to compete with every team we played save for a wickedly good Marshall team.

We likely will go to a bowl this year, but it may be nothing more than a happenstance of schedule.

I do know that at some point we need to beat a team with a winning record. At this juncture it may be that USM is our only opportunity.

Razor I think you are overlooking the vast football alumni that App St, GA SO and others have out there that we do not. Promoting the schools and their program. That is something only time and not money can provide. Should we be more competitive, yes, but just because we moved to FBS at the same time does not erase this or almost 100 years of football in ASU's case..

I think we need a new OC, because to me our game plans and play calling are very simple compared to the higher level teams we are playing. There are certain things that just take time.

We don't have better football facilities than App State (they have an indoor practice field). Fan support is about equal, they sell over 24k tickets for football. Our athletic budget is higher but so are our AD expenses. All we have is a better area code. And if you listen to the coaching staff, there are a lot of players they realize they can't recruit because they'll never make it if they stay in the area.

Some of y'all need to step back and reevaluate what we are and what we have at this moment. Can't keep saying these things as if we are still competing with FCS schools.

People speak of App States success and GA Southern's. Even if all three of our schools were still FCS we would take ass whoopings from them. Theyre programs have been around the block. Hate the comparison about those other two having success at the FBS level so ODU should as well. App State and Ga Southern also didnt just fart their football program back into existence did they?!?!?!?

And if you listen to the coaching staff, there are a lot of players they realize they can't recruit because they'll never make it if they stay in the area.

Some of y'all need to step back and reevaluate what we are and what we have at this moment. Can't keep saying these things as if we are still competing with FCS schools.

App State started football in 1928 and have been a powerhouse for the last decade. If you don't understand they had a leg up, I'm not sure anyone can explain it to you. Hell, they beat Michigan while being an FCS school.

RE: New Coach?
There are a ton of FCS schools that wouldn't fall behind 35-0 to WKU at the start of the game.

A loss was expected, but we've seen to many of these types of asswhippins so far. Maybe we can't compete with them yet, but let's at least look like we showed up.

RE: New Coach?
Some of you guys are unbelievable and so out of touch. Just to bring an analogy although completely irrelevant into discussion is "iphone vs rest" Motorola, Nokia, Siemens have been around for ever and iphone came and knocked them out. Look where they are now. I am not saying this is completely relevant to our situation but please don't tell me we have to wait 100 or so years to see some success like App St or GS did which is a complete BS. We have to make right hires and step up recruiting if we want to see success along with investing in facilities now i understand we have some hurdles as far as financial resources are concerned and we have an AD who have to make some tough calls as to how we do that.
