The problem with the "Trump wing of the party" is that while they do identify some legitimate problems, their proposed solutions are nonsense.
I agree that the loss of jobs overseas is a problem. But NAFTA and TPP are not the problem. Our current tax and regulatory laws and processes are what's driving them away. You look at the economics of deals from the company perspective, and very quickly you see what are the true drivers. And simply lowering taxes the way Trump purposes blows up the deficit and debt to unsustainable levels. We need to lower tax rates and balance the budget. We do that by reducing or eliminating deductions (what democrats call "loopholes") to broaden the base, while implementing a consumption tax to close the revenue shortfall. We could have the lowest corporate tax rate, lowest personal tax rate, and lowest consumption tax rate in the developed world, and still have plenty of revenues to balance the budget. That would be an extreme growth scenario. We would probably have great difficulty building infrastructure to meet the demands of growth.
Illegal immigrants are a huge problem on many fronts. Sending 10 million people back to Mexico and building a wall are not solutions. At this point, the most logical solution is probably a permanent guest worker program, with no path to citizenship unless you came here legally.
Obamacare sucks, and single payer would be worse. Bismarck provides true universal health care (which, remember, Obamacare does not), reduces or eliminates direct government involvement in providing health care, and takes care of sick people as well as our system.
Donald Trump is whom you get for a nominee when you let the process turn into a personality contest. Republicans need to be about issues. They can offer better solutions than democrats. But they have to focus on solutions to do that. And they haven't since Newt's Contract.
