Well, it's not so much that everyone would be worried about saving the Big 12. It's more of a quid pro quo.
The Big 12 schools, outside of a few, don't have any security and would be more expensive if they were to be parsed out to other leagues. If the networks allow the Big 12 to survive at a decreased rate, however, then that alone could be worth it to create the moves everyone else wants...namely UT, OU, and KU moving on.
If I'm the Big 12 though, I try to milk it for everything it's worth. If the others are willing to expand the playoff and I think it will happen eventually anyway then why not go ahead and do it to bring back some stability to this whole setup.
1. Each member of the Power 5 gets a guaranteed slot every year...no one gets left out.
2. More money from an additional round of games. Everyone makes an extra buck.
3. The conference race for each league is more interesting because the winner is a guaranteed playoff participant. Bigger ratings for regular season games equals more money and more stability for all the leagues.
It's true the ratings for last year's games lagged a little bit, but that's because the morons scheduling the event did it on New Year's Eve. Even the Super Bowl would underperform if they scheduled it for that day. The ratings are still huge compared to other games so I don't see a problem from the network's perspective.
