Bearcats Nation,

In light of recent events regarding conference realignment, I wanted to provide some perspective on history, the present and the future.

Our GoBEARCATS.com columnist, Bill Koch, a respected local media member for almost 30 years, has covered UC Athletics since the mid 1980s and has a unique perspective on the trials and tribulations our athletics program has faced through the years.

I asked him to share his thoughts on UC's grasp to reach the highest level of college athletics. With his engagement over the years from his desk at the Cincinnati Post and Cincinnati Enquirer, he has an outstanding perspective and I am excited to share that with our great fans, donors, students, faculty, staff and sponsors.

As President Davenport and I shared Monday, UC will continue to seek the highest and moving our program onward.

I am planning a series of town hall meetings to sit down face-to-face with Bearcats fans to discuss the future.
We look forward to your valued input and participation. Details will follow as soon as they are finalized.

-Mike Bohn, Director of Athletics

Last 2 weeks have been so freaking awful he knows his job is up for grabs if the paying customers unplug.

BTW, where is our Interim President with a cute tweet about the #12?

With this announcement, the meetings will happen. That being said, don't expect him to just come out and say Tubs is toast. We will get something along the lines of how he is constantly evaluating coaching performance and he will follow up with the staff at the end of the season.

What a shill. Koch decides to pick up the story just as the Great Midwest is being formed.

Hey Bill, tell the whole story about how UC athletics fell into an abyss with poor leadership at all levels (just like the last 3 years). How Nippert was condemned, how football was demoted to I-AA, how less than 1,000 showed up for games in both sports, how students were bussed all around the city to watch their team, how there was no tailgating, no merchandising, and no interest from the nation's largest commuter school.

Here is the glimpse of the whole story, "Up From the Tidy Bowl" written by my former editor at the News Record, Frank Diekmann. By the way, the savior in the article Watson Brown only stayed for one season.
https://books.google.com/books?id=iB0DAA...nn&f=false

Both Bohn and Koch should be embarrassed to throw out such a one sided piece of history. There are so many alums that lived through the Tidy Bowl years, and we see it coming again as UC failed to get the job done during realignment. Significant realignment took place almost 50 years ago and UC was not included. So they decided in 1969 to leave the failing Missouri Valley Conference to go Independent even though the prior year in 1968 Greg Cook was the NCAA offense leader, and Jim O'Brien was the scoring leader. UC had a few decent years under Tony Mason in the mid-70's, but didn't have enough money to keep him in town. UC's lack of revenue for football forced the team to swirl down the bowl. Sound familiar?

I appreciate Bohn's willingness to make himself available to the public. Although something tells me his phone has been ringing off the hook and there is justifiable cause to force him in this position. He will get a lot of TT questions so I'm sure he's prepared for that. I also don't expect him to go outside the company line in what he reveals or answers in his questions. We shall see (or hear).

I respect Mike for possibly facing public crucifiction. I'm looking forward to the conversation about our coaching. I hope plenty of fans voice their concern over Tubs... politely, but firmly.

Step off the ledge for a second. This situation isn't the brightest part of UC athletics history, but it's nowhere near what you're comparing it to.

What do you want Bohn to do? He didn't get us in, but nobody else got their school in either. He's obviously responding to the situation and is at least facing up to the fans.

Thank you. This situation is light years from then. Most schools were independent in the time UC was. We also have a gorgeous up to date stadium and a new basketball arena on the horizon. I attended UC during the dark times, this is not even close to then.

I just want to hear WTF our under performing coaches got undeserved extensions. Mick's Las Vegas Lap Dance should have earned him a boot in the arse and Tubbs should have been served notice that he was on a VERY short leash. Instead, we reward both with idiotic extensions that lock us into terms that are head scratching at the very least.

Why are coaches not allowed to listen to offers? Hugs did it every year and got new pay raises for it.

Huggins was winning Conf CH's regularly, made a Final 4, and had a couple Great 8's. Mick has 1 Conf CH and 1 Sweet 16 in 10 years, however acts as if he's John Wooden.

Although I have my issues with Mick, I don't think we could do a whole lot better with anyone else. Tuberville is obviously a different story.

I did not say he wasn't allowed to pursue other offers. I said we should have told him "hasta la vista". He's not gonna elevate UC BB and it's past time to move on.

Totally agree. That's UC leadership in a nutshell when it pertains to athletics.

Bohn lost me at Bill Koch respected media member. I've never known Bill to give an accurate portrayal of UC. He's the guy who complained about having to cover UC in the Orange Bowl.

I am glad Bohn's open to some type of forum. I do not think he will be forthcoming with any real insights or information. I asked to meet with him this spring. He strung me along until deciding my opinion did not matter. However, his department has been more than happy to contact me about money.

Agreed, Mick doesn't have the kind of standing to be flirting around. That was a perfect opportunity to move on from him without the nasty firing process and buyout

Its certainly possible the hoops program has pretty much plateaued under Mick but I have no problem with him entertaining other offers, especially if it gets some much needed commitments from the University. That is the only way to get through to them. The school leadership, BOT, etc...has always been reactive instead of proactive when it comes to athletics. That's why we are stuck right now in this awful conference situation.
Tubs on the other hand should have been gone yesterday
