He is doing a great job of deflecting all of this from the team. One game at a time RTB

So, it's pretty easy to say "I'll be coaching here next season"....just sayin.
I'd love someone to ask him. @Fo you see any circumstance where you won't coach every game this year?"

Why don't fans just enjoy the moment and not worry about what might or might not happen?

Uhhh, he Can control rumors or speculation about going to Purdue. He can say "NO, I'm not going Purdue next year. No IFs, ands or BUTs."

Probably because fans are human (mostly). Fun to look ahead if YOU personally don't need to remain focused like a laser on the next game. Players must do that, fans don't.

No reason that 'enjoying the season' and 'looking at possibilities' are mutually exclusive. One can do both as a fan and this one is doing just that. But I refuse to get all wrapped around an axle with fear that a coach gets an offer and leaves. That's a distraction for me. I'd rather spend my energy watching and cheering for a team on a mission.

Once he comments on ONE situation, he has opened the door and will be assailed for not commenting on all the possible job openings that sports writers and fans can come up with. His best bet is to stay tight lipped and focused as he is on THIS season.

He won't have to comment ever again if he said," I'll be at WMU next year "

True. It'd be easy. If everyone were rifiling off "Are you going to coach Idaho next year?" and a week later "Are you going to coach Southern Illinois next year?" -- it'd be easy.

Plus, one of his quotes a couple weeks ago or so was Purposely up in the air whether or not he'd move on to another place or not and that that decision will come to him later, etc.

So him not answering Purdue or any other P5 place ... well, it's saying "I'm not ruling out moving away from WMU, but I'm not going to say whether or not I've ruled that team specifically off."

I'd say it's 87% he goes to a p5 program. 11% he goes to a higher level g5. 2% chance he stays at WMU.

I don't see a G5 team that he would even consider.

I don't really care about this. If PJ stays, then great. If not, the cupboard will be fully stocked next year to dominate again and there's a ton of great young coaching talent that would be drooling to take the WMU job. Chris Klieman is one right off the top of my head. The culture has been established and I trust Kathy to make the best hire to keep the boat rowing in the right direction for years to come.

Just gotta enjoy the here and now! 04-cheers

Maybe but I think he will get plenty of P5 interest and when the carousel stops he will be at Purdue taking a little less money to be in a great location for both family and recruiting.

I would say San Diego State -- their coach is probably going to get hired. But he's making $800k base salary, just like Fleck -- so I don't think that's going to be an option. S Florida's coach -- too early. Only 2nd year of a winning % so I doubt he'll go... and even though he's making $1.15m in base+supplemental, it wouldn't be much more enough to draw Fleck all the way down there to reboot, albeit with a now winning team, even if they bumped up the $$ a little bit more.

So basically, it'd be Houston as the option. This is Tom Herman's 2nd year at Houston. He gets paid $2.5m a year. So yes, it would be worth it -- plus, not rebooting a team. More $$ to handle flights to see kids & family and so on in Illinois, just a bit longer flights. COULD be an option. Especially if there's secret (or convincing) talk that they'll join a P5 Conference within a few years.

Herman's only 2nd year -- a P5 is going to be doling out lots of $$ to get him for a buyout, I'm sure.

PJ doesn't want to walk into something fully established, can't take credit for later success as much that way. He wants to find a situation where a program is underachieving but in the middle of the pack. Houston doesn't have too much farther to go (depending on how they finish). Boise he'd just be the next chapter.

I agree with you 100 percent. Although I have always been pro-fleck, one thing I agree with is that he is not short on ego. Most coaches aren't. And fleck wants to be thought of as a miracle worker. Frankly, his strengths are well suited for a school like Purdue or Vanderbilt, where he can sell the benefits of an excellent college, and promise he will turn everything around. Especially if he has the administration behind him, and money to do what he wants. Fleck has a strong philosophy in what he does, and the conviction to stick with it. He will continue to do well.

Must also understand that he might be also angling to increase his worth here at WMU. If he takes the other opportunities off the table too early, he might cost himself a raise here in Kalamazoo... Right now he has all of the leverage...

The way he's handling this situation is also beneficial to his stock... By not allowing it to distract himself, his coaching staff or his players... and continue to win games is another testament to his abilities.
