RE: PJ NIU Press Conference
I wasn't going to waste my time watching. And then I did-- at least part.
Pretty intense guy.
But, I think he gets it in terms of "It's about the students." Check him out at around 13:20.

Do our people get it?

Quote:Acting all confident and smug is a fun thing to do, trust me we have been there. All it takes is one loss to burst that bubble unfortunately, just one loss.

Honestly, it wasn't a pro-PJ thing at all (even if we were, say, like the last years on our way to 8-4 or something). It was "Fire Carey" jab reminder, in response to the hate-PJ thing. Which would one rather have, even when disliking PJ.

Quote:Over PJ? Absolutely!

Really? Even if PJ, who you dislike as a person with his exhuberance and stunning personality, had you guys at 4-1/5-0 right now? You'd rather have Carey at 1-4?

Quote:Seeing what PJ could do at WMU, a school who has never seen double digit wins, I could only imagine the recruits he could have conjured on the heels of NIUs success.

Exactly. PJ would have been hired away by last year if he stayed at NIU, with NIU's name and what he had to work with. On top of that, it being his home university + closer to his kids where his ex-wife is with them -- he'd also be set to stay longer, and who knows, might still be there for an extra year or two making NIU the next Boise. I think there'd be a lot less anti-PJ stuff, and WMU fans would be groaning about him instead.

Quote:If PJ loses Saturday how will you feel?

Oh, extremely pissed. If we beat you guys the last two years, I would still be pissed, but I would be mad in a different way. If we do lose to you guys on Saturday I will be fuming. Will that make me have wanted us swapping coaches 3.x years ago? No, not at all. But I will be FUMING because NIU "shouldn't" have beat us over the past 2 years. We choked 2nd half & collapsed 2 years ago at home, then with all your injuries still couldn't get revenge even though we beat ranked Toledo. Ugh.

But yes, I'll be very upset. Unlike other WMU fans, I won't be upset if it's a relatively close game thru most of it. I expect NIU to put some punch into it with Maddie & confidence going. NIU *could* win. But WMU has every reason NOT to let their record & ranking go to their heads. This is NIU who's 1-0 in the MAC. Revenge, Revenge. Even not performing greatly and the wind not blowing our way, we have no excuses to lose to NIU during our Homecoming after blowing it the past two seasons against them.

Only point was being an a-hole feels good at the time, but when you lose just one game, all that ends real quick like.

For me personally, yes, I'd rather have Carey over Fleck no matter what our record is. For the better part of my life, I have despised self-absorbed, egotistic, narcissistic yuppies. That holds true here, too. Can't stand the guy. Sorry.

For me, I don't care. I care about how the coach is positively impacting the players, getting recruits, and most importantly, how far along he's getting the team in winning. I couldn't care less if he was a yuppie, a hippie, or a Carey. Whether he's quiet, disgruntled, or like he had 5 Red Bulls (ahem Fleck ahem).

You guys will love/not-love PJ's persona about NIU here to this Video Link (won't show twitter):

You heard it through the same filter all the PJ haters use.
As JB04 noted, Fleck said he was proud to be an alum......he had two opportunities to go there (didn't say become the head coach as the questioner speculated). Then admitted he "wasn't hired and that's okay, that wasn't the right right for them."

There's a particular irony in MD cautioning against being smug when that is what has fueled this board despite lop-sided bowl defeats and a seven-game losing streak.
Novak knew what he was doing when he hired an Ohio State grad assistant to his staff as wide receivers coach and then gave him recruiting coordinator duties. The next time, perhaps it was a courtesy interview, but Fleck did get that.
The last time, the whole situation was handled terribly by NIU's administration, Fleck and Doeren. Blame goes in many directions for that not working out.
DogPoundNorth can rail al he wants about corny garbage, but it's gotten positive attention for WMU from everywhere but here, and he can say PJ will leave the moment he gets a shot in a real conference exactly like Doeren did.
Dog Fan can't stand the guy and that's his option, but that's too bad because as Fleck says time after time, he's proud to be an NIU Alum. The extent of his loathing is somewhat surprising because I've always considered Dog Fan to be a true Huskie who supports the program for more than just wins and losses. And that type of individual is in direct contrast to some of the band-wagon jumpers who never saw a game in a west grandstand-only Huskie Stadium or shook the old bleachers in Evans. The band-wagon, no respect for others "fans" are the ones best described as self-absorbed, egotistic, narcissistic.
Don't always agree with Rabid Squirrel, but his post in this thread hits the nail on the head. Fleck's path most likely doesn't involve NIU anymore, but how many people have said coaching their alma mater is the ultimate job, so it's worth wondering how passionately Fleck would have recruited. Sorry Dog Fan, but I'd absolutely prefer to watch a Fleck press conference over any one delivered by Carey.

Uhhh yeah I know. Except NIU didn't have a bunch of Oar's and Tree's and corny a$$ sayings painted all over our stadium and offices when he left.

Hate on P.J. and his motivational shenanigans all you want, but the students/fans at WMU have really responded to it. Just look at their attendance numbers. P.J. understands how to build/develop a community.

Good for WMU...it will all be over soon.

and let's just say his "community relations" weren't exactly squeaky clean....

The last time, the whole situation was handled terribly by NIU's administration, Fleck and Doreen. Blame goes in many directions for that not working out.

He's ego driven, annoying but 5-0, that's all that counts

Players recruited by the 5-0 coach robbing a coed at gunpoint doesn't count? It does for me. I'll take 0 and whatever with respectable human beings instead.

That being said Carey has his own problems that warrant his dismissal.

I don't think I've ever seen you be optimistic. Ever.

Doesn't surprise me that you only remember things you don't agree with.
