UNR's football is better than UNLV's.

BYU will NOT join the MWC. Yes, they will pretend to be equal with Utah into eternity before they join the MWC, AAC or any other G5 league. They said that they couldn't sustain independence only in the context of not being in a POWER conference. Their independent TV contract and schedule arestill far superior to being in a G5 league and they at least some additional prestige, too.
The MWC and AAC are about as likely to add Notre Dame compared to adding BYU. That's how strongly BYU feels on this issue. It's a non-starter to willingly and structurally relegate themselves to the G5 when Utah is in the Pac-12. It's just a non-starter with everyone that matters at BYU.
Utah in the PAC-12 changed the dynamic for BYU. Being independent and having a decent ESPN deal is bettter than having a conference slate of East Carolina, Tulane, SMU, Central Florida, etc. BYU joining the AAC or MWC or one of those "best of the rest" scenarios people throw on this board means they accepted Utah's rise and their new place as a mid major. Not going to happen.
BYU is afraid of getting frozen out of scheduling opportunities due to LGBTQ issues. A conference would afford some serious protection in this respect as long as it comes about in a rapid fashion that doesn't allow the LGBTQ stuff to rear its head during the formation.
I think BYU is also getting a little more comfortable with having Boise as a primary rival. If Boise moves to a "Best Of" I think BYU listens. If rebroadcast of content on BYU TV is permitted, if it provides NY6 access, and has a promise of decent bowl tie-ins, I think BYU joins.
They've got fears beyond that. LGBTQ groups are attacking their accreditation as well.

GLBT issues or not I just can't see BYU being left out in the cold when it comes to scheduling. One thing is to question their inclusion in a conference like Iowa State did and another is blocking BYU in signing a 1-1 deal with X school. There's plenty of G5 schools that would like to play BYU. The entire Pac-12 South likes to play BYU as well. SEC schools have more conservative fanbases as well so they would be willing to schedule them. There's the service academies too.
Schools were boycotting North Dakota because of the Sioux name. I can easily see a lot of the Pac 12 and Big 10 schools getting pressure from inside the schools to not schedule BYU. Its coming.

A best of the rest conference is not going to gain an automatic playoff spot and any little extra TV money is going to be offset by increased travel costs. Guys, if this were to happen it already would have. The only thing I can see is the MWC moving into Texas with two of Rice, UTEP, N. Texas, or UTSA.

There is no real UNLV football. Their football program is no better than SJSU's. And I don't see a reason to believe it's going to drastically improve in the future, or to believe that the Vegas casino godfathers are ever going to pour money into UNLV football. Look at all that money they're diverting into a stadium project to chase the Raiders, why have they never funneled even one-thousandth that much money into UNLV football? Because UNLV football doesn't make the top 100 on their list of priorities.
Well, the Fertittas just donated $10 million towards a football training facility for UNLV. The Fertittas seem to be getting fairly active in the Las Vegas sports community (they also donated a ton of money to their high school alma mater Bishop Gorman to fund what is quite possibly the best high school training complex in the country), so you never know where UNLV might end up if that keeps up.

I wish Texas would go independent. We need more independents.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the AAC coming up TV contract talks. They do have a case they should get more money. ESPN can allow them to test the open market. ESPN has quantity inventory due to their deals with MAC, CUSA and SB but not the same quality. However, these conferences will play whatever night or time ESPN demands.
Neither side has an advantage over the other. It will always come down to supply and demand. Is the demand there for other networks to want the AAC and does the ESPN believe it will be worth the cost.
I think the AAC needs not worry about renewing the contract early but see what the other bidders offer. I think the AAC would be a great compliment to ND on NBC.
NBCSN could offer Thur or Fri night AAC games
NBC does 2 AAC Games Saturday.
NBCSN does 2-3 AAC Games Saturday
Example using this Saturday Games
UCF at Houston – 7pm, NBCSN (Fri.)
Cincinnati at Temple – Noon - NBC
Miami, FL at Notre Dame – 3:30pm, NBC
Navy at USF – 8pm NBC
UConn at East Carolina – Noon, NBCSN
SMU at Tulane – 3:30pm, NBCSN
Tulsa at Memphis – 7pm, NBCSN

Anything, anything can be done if the people doing it know how to get it done. NC should know that better than anybody .

UNLV is the better option to make money (market, popularity, etc.). However, Nevada is not a terrible expansion option if the PAC or new XII (after the current contract is completed.) Academically, the most recent USNWR Rankings have UNLV as "Ranking Not Published" and Nevada as #197 (National). Nevada is the state flagship and also a land-grant and space-grant university. Maybe take both?

That's what we all thought the last time around too. But -- the conference was new at the time and RU/UL left during negotiations. Perhaps stability will help -- it's hard to see a bidding war starting over AAC football. They'll still do better than the Mountain West: they are in better time zones and aren't a one-trick pony.

RE: Big 12 non-expansion effect on the G5 conferences and Indy programs
I agree with everyone who says that building a nation-wide, best of the G5 conference would get no more money per school than the AAC gets now.
The system is rigged, in that regard. ESPN, et al will simply say "yeah ... you're not a P5, so we can't pay you that much". It's a circular argument. The money is what makes you a P and what enables you to hire bigger name coaches, etc. But you can't get the money unless you're in a P conf. It's a sealed system.
So all you're doing is increasing your travel budgets, while getting the same TV time slots and the same money.

As long as Utah is a P5 program and BYU continues to make more money as an independent than being in a G5 conference........well you see where I'm heading with this.
