Maximum number of undefeated teams: 7
-Ohio State/Michigan/Nebraska, Texas A&M/Alabama, Washington, Clemson, Baylor/West Virginia, Western Michigan, Boise State
Week 7 Thoughts:
-Several of our undefeated teams got major challenges from our 1 loss teams and in every case this week, the undefeated team came out ahead. That meant overtime for Ohio State and Clemson.
-We are back to more undefeated teams than 1 loss teams after losing 11 one loss teams and keeping all the undefeated ones.
-We only have 12 teams left who are undefeated or have 1 loss from the 5 power conferences. Based on history, these are our most likely teams to end up in the top 4 by far. The field is getting narrower though and a 2 loss team is more likely than not to finish in the top 4 in the next couple of years (minimum). An undefeated Boise State (should it dominate the rest of its competition) shouldn’t be completely dismissed as a possibility either (Western Michigan has been very impressive too, but I don’t think is going to have quite a strong enough win to get them in under any realistic circumstances).
-Miami (OH) got its first win this week. With half a season to go, that leaves only Rice winless.
Week 8 Thoughts:
-We have one game between undefeated teams next week with Texas A&M heading to Alabama. We have undefeated Boise State with a tough Friday night match-up vs. BYU. Our other Saturday games involving undefeated teams are: Illinois @ undefeated Michigan, Purdue at undefeated Nebraska, TCU at undefeated West Virginia, Eastern Michigan at undefeated Western Michigan, Oregon State at undefeated Washington, and undefeated Ohio State at Penn State.
-For 1 loss games, we have 1-loss Memphis at 1-loss Navy. Should the Midshipman win this one, they will have an effective 2 game lead over everyone except Tulsa (1 game over Memphis and Houston, but with wins over both). We also have North Carolina State (a week after failing to quite finish off Clemson) playing at 1-loss Louisville.
-It’s odd to be down to just one winless team already and this might be the end of that list next week. Winless Rice hosts I-AA Prairie View.
