It's a total and utter collapse of a program, anyway you look at it.

It really is an epic free fall.

It is and one would think STF is trying to figure something out! He is considered a football guy, and for him to have extended Carey's contract a a big strike, but to sit there and do nothing has to hurt his chances of landing a P5 AD position even more! Most universities I have heard his name mentioned about is a football school. What university would want to hire him so under his guidance the football team implodes! As far as $ to buy out Carey; STF gets paid big $ to figure stuff like that out!

He needs to follow Carey out the door.

I just think of how this progressed, his being promoted as other coaches left, how assistants move up and how JV level coaches have been brought in that many were fond of. I understand you have to go lower level to get a coach when you are an NIU, but geez, at least Kill had proven himself and brought his own people. Just seems recent hires are just castoff misfits.

This thing is headed straight down. Carey acted like an arrogant arse from the beginning so I can't feel sorry for him. I feel bad for the fans.

WE WENT FROM THE ORANGE BOWL TO THIS.

I think the coordinator changes after last season were a last ditch effort to recapture some of the glory years. The changes have obviously not panned out as planned and it is becoming increasingly more apparent that it is time to completely blow this thing up and bring in some fresh faces.

Novak resign? Joe retired and he had been considering it for over a year.
Nobody in their right mind wanted him to go.

I don't know if there is a quick or easy fix to this mess. Just like winning breeds winning, losing breeds losing. We are 1-9 in our last 10 games, and we have nowhere hit bottom. We need a new coaching staff and better recruits. In other words, a good house cleaning. That will take time, assuming that STF is even interested instead of putting positive spins on this mess.

Lets just hope a big donor or potential donor that is a die hard pulls the trigger and covers the buyout. Without this, we are stuck.

Do those even exist though? Is Barsema a big football fan or does he happen to be looking for another big tax write off?

That is harsh. Donations like those from Mr. Barsema are unselfish gifts that make NIU stronger. The are tax deductible but they are not 100 percent deductible and they lighten the bank accounts of the generous alums who support their alma mater.

He could have had a much better record in his final season had he burned the red shirts of some talented true freshman while injuries mounted. However he was unselfish and resisted the temptation to do so so he could turn the strongest program possible over to his successor who he helped to choose.

Clean house & start at the top with STF.

Another school in a very similar place is Fresno State. I remember when they were battling with NIU for the BCS bowl. Their coach got an extension around the same time as Carey and the bottom has fallen out on their program since Carr left. They are about to post their third straight losing season. I am not sure why they haven't made a coaching change yet but I would hope NIU doesn't wait that long to shake things up.

DeRuyter went 9-4 and 11-2 in 2012 and 2013 and it's pretty hard for a school like that to justify firing him 2 years later (at the end of last season). My guess is he'll get canned at the end of this year if they have the money; he makes about $1.5 million a year in base salary and has a couple years left on his deal so they'd have to eat a few million to do it.

I guess that was my thought. This year would be the only losing year under Carey. Is that enough to make a change?

The staff has been nothing but incompetent in every phase of coaching. The only reason we are not 5-2 is the god awful coaching that has been going on this year. This is the worst coaching job I have ever seen in any level. It's putrid.

The sad thing about being 1-6 is that outside of the USF game, they were all within reach for most of the game. I think that's one of the things that really highlights the failure of Rod Carey and the coaches to really lead and inspire this team. Watching NIU under RC you just come to expect that we'll "beat ourselves" every game.

If he's interested and willing, I like the idea of Sam Pittman. He knows the culture here from when he helped building what we had and is a great recruiter.

Pittman would probably be a good hire. Hammock should be considered if he's interested.

Pittman would be a great candidate, but earns over $600k in a role that has several years of stability.

I like Matt Canada too as he is throwing up some points in his first year as Pitts OC, but he too is earning about $600k and was just hired so he seems to have several years of cushion.

So I don't know if we could even afford those guys, or if they even want to come. I have a feeling SF has guys in mind and have nothing to do with our love fest for past coaches. I still am 50/50 we even do anything after the season, solely based on money we don't have03-puke

Maybe that luck quotient finally caught up with them. NIU should have 3 wins this year. It is such an odd thing to watch, they can't close out games yet they pretty much exchanged punch for punch on the road with one of the better teams in the nation in K-Zoo. It is a downward trend but it is just impossible not to wonder where our minds would be given competent coaching. Program is not void of talent given the ability to compete evenly against top 25 competition.

The only way we get those types of coordinators is if they aspire to be a HC at a P5 making a few mil. They need to be a HC at the G5 level to get there with a resume.
