Big 12 expansion and formation
Good read from the Houston Chronicle. I will only quote a couple of points in an article that covers a lot of territory. Its notable that former Commissioner Neinas and former UT AD Dodds both mention travel.

http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/c...971434.php

....From the get-go, the Big 12 was a league of exclusion, at least when it came to certain members of the old SWC - Rice, Houston, SMU and, at the time, TCU. Several officials have said combining all eight SWC members with the Big Eight into a 16-school league was a non-starter, and former UH athletic director Bill Carr said it was clear in the early 1990s that Texas was seeking a more prosperous path with fewer financial hangers-on.
"It was amazing how underfunded and under-peopled we were at the time," Carr said. "Texas was worn out carrying the SWC. DeLoss Dodds once said, 'My people are worn slick' from hosting so many championships. And he was right. There was an unavoidable (financial) draft between institutions."
While folklore has asserted otherwise over the years, several of those who were involved in the Big 12's creation are adamant that Baylor and Texas Tech were clear-cut choices for the league, based on their on-field success, attendance and investment in facilities....

Some things, however, are clear to some observers. Chuck Neinas, the former interim conference commissioner and a longtime college football industry consultant, said last week, "Let's face it: There's only three in the race: U of H, Cincinnati, BYU."
But Neinas, along with many observers, now expect the league to stand pat for the time being.
"My gut tells me it probably won't (expand), and my gut tells that it probably shouldn't," Dodds said. "But that doesn't mean that they won't and that it wouldn't be a good thing if they did.
"They've done the math on how it will play out. The bottom line is to decide if it's the right thing for student-athletes to have a different conference mix based on geography. That's the bottom line to me: kids having good competition and not being worn out by traveling."

....Long accustomed, even in retirement, to being blamed for every hiccup in the Big 12's timeline, Dodds is sanguine about its present state and its immediate future.
"It's still a good conference," he said. "Other conferences may bring in more money, but the Big 12 is in the ballpark. It's diverse, and it's working. The best part is the geographic fit. You don't hurt kids with so much travel.
"I would have hoped that A&M would stay and that Nebraska would stay, but it's worked out fine for them and still working out fine for the Big 12. It wasn't a disaster. It was people making their own decisions."
Of A&M's departure to the SEC, Dodds said, noting the 1994 flirtation and others, "They always had tendencies that way, and Texas really never has. The competition between them was healthy and good for this part of the country, but I'm not shocked by what they did."....

Well I know BYU has been summarily dismissed, on the board. As well has the notion of football-only. And I'm sure I was probably part of that dismissal quorum. Ha!

But I will say ... given BYU's win last night over Mississippi St, following the win over Mich St .... they are certainly doing everything in their power to at least get consideration for a football-only invite!

BYU and Cincinnati make the most sense.
