CBS seemed to make it clear when they refused to renegotiate with the SEC, that they will be a player, only so long, as the price is right.

van,
No, I think the Big Ten learned their lesson on bringing in low-population (ie, low cable TV household) states. Got it right the next time.
Corbett,
If CBS wants to continue to get some of the best CFB regular season ratings games of the year, at a fraction of the cost of NFL, then it had better well plan on paying what those games are worth. Else, I guess ESPN and FOX will continue to be the big winners.

No. CBS got no additional inventory from the SEC expansion. Why should they have paid more? They get the same number of games now as they did before, only they did give up exclusivity to their time slot as a concession to the SEC. So they did negotiate, they just didn't pony up more cash.

Pretty much.
If you were a network that just got arm-twisted into paying $XX million to close a contract loop hole that their legal department should have caught, wouldn't you want to break up the band?
Especially given that the B1G and SEC have been very reliable cash cows, and the ACC is loyal to a fault (see Raycom).
I am looking at what could work. I can see that the ACC is nothing but a failure. ESPN and Fox
If I was somebody running a Network? I would offer multi-million dollar payouts for schools in the G5 and FCS to form a P6 conference. I would give out between $15 million to $20 million a piece. Those schools are worth more than several P5 schools.
These are the schools I would look at.

Portland State
Eastern Washington
Boise State
UNR
BYU
Gonzaga

Hawaii
San Diego State

I forgot some schools in my first thought, and added them in my second thought. This would take schools away from both ESPN and Fox that they are paying for content. I would give out a bonus for every P5 schools that these teams beat in a season. Teach those leaches of the Networks and P5 conferences a lesson. What happens if these schools in these conferences do much better than the ACC Network and so forth? ESPN and Fox would lose a lot of money since they left it on the table by not expanding with these schools out there.
So getting a job is simply out of the question, isn't it?
.
I am looking at it at this stand point. The ACC did not deserve a tv network with the like of schools of Duke, Wake Forest and Miami Florida struggling to have people at the games and watching on tv.
Second, ESPN and Fox is afraid that the Big 12 would become the better conference when they add the 6 best schools that have great tv ratings which includes Boise State. If a lot of people start watching more Big 12 games with any of the 20 + on the list? It will take viewers away from the ACC, Big 10 and PAC 12. Most of their games are nothing but snooze fest, and not worth watching.
"Deserve" is subjective and really has nothing to do with it.
A conference either has a network or it does not. The Big 12 does not, the ACC does.

A conference either has a network or it does not. The Big 12 does not, the ACC does.
The question is not quantity does not sell. The quality sells that makes you money. ACC have the quantity of the population wise, but they do not have the on field performance that sells tickets and viewers. The on field quality sells tickets and tv ratings. That is why Boise State and several other G5 schools have been better than any of the P5 schools from a small population wise are getting more viewers and tv ratings, and tickets sell in the stands. It is a poor businessmen of making money which does not bring a profit That is why quality of the product sells, and there is no way all of these P5 conferences can sell a quality product which is why schools like Boise State seems to be an idea partner for a P5 stand point to bring a product on the table. These stupid Presidents do not see this, and wants to dilute the product by bringing schools like SMU, Tulane, Rice like schools.
