Question. What is the difference between a bar that shows sports and a sports bar?
Brookhaven is the only bar I've watched sports in Memphis.

Just wonderin

Other than that, though, there isn't much.

Brookhaven is a bar that shows sports, not a sports bar.

Anywhere else?

The Field on Beale. Ask for Smitty. Just tell him Cal sent you and he will treat you right.

I'm probably the oddball because I've never been blown away by their food, but we went there one night for March Madness games and had fun.

One of my best friends in Memphis (and very occasionally poster) moved back there from here and the Local is local to him.

I really like it there. Good food and good beer.

Had drinks upstairs and met the guy that does the 'Memphis as F#$%' shirts...

We went to Local's patio bar at the Midtown location last weekend. Really nice bartenders, good tv monitors, and nice atmosphere.

I would say the difference is that the proprietor of a real sports bar will know what games are on each day and will be prepared to show them and have his employees change the channel when each big game begins, and will open early when a big game or match is on, like Max's or Celtic. They realize the importance of these games to their customers, and cater to it. Max's even posts which games are shown on which tv's, and has a chalkboard of basketball tournaments. 04-cheers

A bar that "shows sports" has waitstaff that stare at you like you have two heads when you ask them to put on a game, then disappear forever, until you finally manhandle someone to turn on your game in the second quarter. 03-banghead03-hissyfit

They guy who owns the Bobcat actually sends out e-mails every week advertising which games will be shown on the limited TV's. HoopDreams has seen Billy's handy work. Most of them feature scantily clad young women.

I don't think it's open. Had a very cool upstairs bar. It was billed as a sports bar and had decent NFL watching experience on Sunday afternoons.

No idea. I went maybe twice to watch football. Some buddies were regulars for sports. All the sudden drag show advertisement flyers started showing up in the windows and it slowed down from there. Don't even know if it's for sale or open by someone else, but with everything going on down on broad it likely has potential.

Sho did. I used to see the packed patio for games, so I thought the BF and I would check it out. We went in and halfway into our first drink, we noticed no one in there was like us.....no problem, but the clientele completely changed. But everyone was nice. Had my favorite bartender from Mulligan's, Keith. Sure wish I knew where he went...

The place was called Jack Magoo's.

It was a REALLY good place to watch sports and they catered to sports fans. (Showed UFC PPVs...) The owners were gay and at some point they tried to have a night where they could do shows and such.

Along the way, some guy with a condition that resembled intoxication (but wasn't) was apparently mistreated/assaulted by a bouncer and they bar owners didn't have a response that was deemed appropriate by some and fell out of favor.

I think it's called the Red Zone now and am not sure what kind of bar it caters to.

Celtic is a soccer sports bar. Good luck trying to watch an american sport during one of those times a big futbol game is going on. Just a bunch of jersey wearing nerds rooting for some Portuguese guy to kick a ball past a German.
