"Is this rock bottom for the Big 12?"
Just posted on ESPN.com

http://www.espn.com/college-football/sto...tom-big-12

Not even a decade ago, the Big 12 had reached its apex.

In 2008, the Big 12 South had emerged as the best division in college football, headlined by heavyweights Oklahoma and Texas trading blows for conference supremacy and the chance to play for national championships. The Big 12 had just signed one TV deal with ESPN, and was primed to ink another with Fox.

The conference appeared harmonious. And seemed stable.

Since that time, the Big 12 has been in a free fall, culminating with a new low point this year.

"I don't know if the conference has hit rock bottom yet," said one source familiar with Big 12 matters. "But we can see the bottom."

On the field struggles isn't as big a deal. Those things wax and wane. The off the field stuff is a big deal, especially the Baylor fiasco. Hopefully the expansion cloud can be put to rest and the league can move on.

If making more than every conference aside from the SEC and Big 10 is rock bottom then I will take it.

Which will be negotiated in 6-8 years. If things improve over the course of the next 2-4 years it won't matter what happened this year or last year.

At least the Big 12 hasn't become psychologically disadvantaged.

RE: "Is this rock bottom for the Big 12?"
Earnings is why Big 12 media partners are so excited about expansion.

Considering the Big 12 is getting paid for 12 teams and sharing it with 10, the pay-out should be more than larger leagues.

The reality is the Big 12 business model is busted. It mortgaged it's future for the a few bucks more a team by refusing to expand with more than two in 2011. When the Big 12 decided Louisville and Cincinnati "didn't move the needle" The Big 12 hurt its stability.

Louisville jumped to The ACC and conference expansion ended. The ACC signed a GOR, extended and got a network.

All while the Big 12 waited for Clemson and Florida State to jump to the Big 12.

Hopefully the Big 12 will do the right thing and expand with Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis and others next week. Knowing the Big 12 they won't though

So you are saying the big 12 should expand with by more than 4 schools next week? That seems absurd.

RE: "Is this rock bottom for the Big 12?"
Absolutely idiotic article. Last year they finished #5, #7, #13 and #20 in FBall and #3, #4, #14, #15 and #24 in Bball. For a ten team league that is very solid. So their normal powerhouse FBall teams have had a bad start to 2016 and now they have hit "rock bottom".

Total useless click bait.

Texas and Oklahoma, they are gone with the expiration of the present GOR. Might even take their little brothers with them. The Big 12 should be forward thinking and prepare for that inevitable event.

Absurd is this circus that has surrounded this expansion process. Is Bowlsby really Sideshow Bob?

the Big 12 is not getting paid for 12 teams with only 10 teams

only those that have no clue about anything think this

the Big 12 contract with Fox was signed as a contract with the Big 12 having 10 teams

the Big 12 contract with ESPN was signed in Sept of 2012 when the Big 12 had 10 teams including TCU and WVU and at that time Fox also agreed to pay a bit more to get better selections

the Big 12 contract with the Sugar Bowl was signed when the Big 12 was 10 teams

so all of the major money the Big 12 makes comes from contracts that were signed when the Big 12 was 10 teams including with TCU and WVU

only someone that is totally clueless would claim the Big 12 is getting paid for 12

and the agreement in the contracts to pay the Big 12 for a CCG even with less than 12 teams was also a part of the contract signed in Sept of 2012

so your claim is totally and completely 100% false and just a total lie and BS based on complete ignorance of reality

Don't let facts get in the way.....

"There's also some history here. Executives at ESPN and Fox remember 2010 when they helped hold the conference together against the Pac-12's raid by keeping rights fees at the 12-team level, even though the Big 12 was reduced to 10 teams..."

Rock bottom would be when the GoR approaches and Texas/OU go in separate directions. They're still far from that.

I think it's an excellent article. I don't however believe the Big 12 has hit rock bottom; far from it. The Big 12 can sink much further. By the time things are said and done with The Big 12, Sideshow Bob is going to make Meatball Marrinatto look like a Mensa man.
