STR - Fuente could run the table
Just took a glance at Va Tech's remaining schedule and didn't realize he avoided Clemson, Fla St AND L'ville. Lucky draw his first year in a big boy conference.

That said, ol' boy Fuente could very well run the table and make the ACC championship game. They somehow manage to win that, and hello playoff.

Not bad. Not bad at all. Good luck to him.

Thats the beauty of the ACC. Win 1 out of 2 of your regular season challenging games, win the conference title, and instant playoffs.

You can certainly debate who is more likely to run the table. I'd say Tech right now based on the way they've played to this point. Va Tech's remaining strength of schedule is tougher than Memphis's, but it's comparable when you factor in how good both teams are. Objectively speaking, Va Tech is the better team. They'd be favored over Memphis regardless of where they played. I'm not saying it would be improbable for Memphis to beat Va Tech, but the odds would be against it. If I had to guess, Tech would be 8-10 point favorites.

The difference with Tech running the table would be a chance to make the playoff, which is why I started the thread in the first place. It would be interesting to see a coach, one year removed from Memphis, be in contention for the college football playoff.

I wish him nothing but good things. What he did here was nothing short of incredible. As Drake once said, "Started at the bottom, now we're here."

RE: STR - Fuente could run the table
Memphis, right now, would be favored in all their remaining games except Houston.
Va Tech would be favored in all their remaining regular season games.
So, yea, Va Tech is more likely to run the table of the regular season. However, the SOS of the remaining opponents is about the same for each school. Va Tech's remaining ACC schedule is not vastly superior to the remaining AAC schedule of Memphis. There's an average of about 1 point difference in Sagarin SOS.

If Va Tech does reach their CCG, they will run into Clemson. So I wouldn't bet on Va Tech reaching the playoffs. But it's possible. Win the games they're supposed to, then pull the upset against Clemson. Memphis would need to also pull one upset - Houston - then win the rest they're favored to win, to likely get the G5 access bowl slot (no shot at playoff).

I doubt the Tigers will be favored over Navy, and even if they were, that one will be a tough one to win. South Florida might even be favored over us by the time we face them. I think we have a very competitive schedule remaining.

I wonder if memphis could be that type of program.
Remember, when Tulsa basketball had that reputation. In the 80s and 90s , their head coaches included Tubby, Nolan richardson, bill self, and steve robinson. None of those coaches stayed to make tulsa their permanent home. But, what a list of good coaches!

With that said. i would love for norvell to be successful here and stay for a long time. Go Tigers!

I wouldn't order the flagpole for a Virginia Tech title flag just yet. They certainly could run the tables, but they have 3 games -- Miami, Duke and Norte Dame -- that will give Tech troubles. The last 2 are on the road. Miami is ranked and the game is on a Thursday night, but at Tech. Conceivably they could make a run. Strange things happen, but it's more likely Tech will lose two of the three games mentioned above. And, of course, they have to play Georgia Tech's triple option, which has always given Bud Foster's defense headaches.

Bingo!

That is the real reason Fuente was in such a hurry to go to VaTech.

Coaches and AD's don't seem to have much input into expansion.
