RE: Experts Say UConn Should Have Backup Plan [Big East says no to expansion]

UConn had a couple years as a fringe top-25 program while in the Big East, strung together multiple bowl appearances and won the league once, less than a decade into top-level football. Pasqualoni bottomed out the program. They're fine with a competent coach.

UConn's name recognition and market access make them more valuable than their potential replacements. Any argument about the American expelling UConn's football program necessitates an explanation of the national broadcast appeal of......Old Dominion? Western Kentucky?
The AAC might consider UCONN for Olympic sports only while parking its football elswhere, but not the other way around. The value and name rec you speak of are for MBB and WBB. UCONN FB only in the AAC would be a non-starter for the AAC presidents, and I think you know that. Good luck trying, though. Puts your football program in hospice.

Coaching is important. Edsall developed the talent he recruited, and UConnn was competitive more often than not in the Big East -- until Edsall left town.
There isn't a lot of talent in New England to select from. So UConn either has to find diamonds in the rough, and develop them, or recruit nationally (like BC and Syracuse did) to have a consistently winning program.
It can be done. It's just not the easiest path. If Basketball success can be parlayed into football recruiting success, even more so. But UConn needs to put a winner on the field. 2010 was a long time ago in the eyes of a recruit.

They always recruited PA, MD and to some degree GA and FL. If you look at the players from UConn who went pro, most are from CT, MA, PA and FL.
