Can the Big 12 afford to be so myopic??

Does it matters? If the GOR isn't extended the conference is probably going away after 2025 anyway.

I used to think this, but not convinced anymore.

RE: NBC Sports: Big 12 expansion decision Monday?
I think they could add 16 teams with some of them just football only.
Boise State and BYU have been scheduling to play each other every year now. BYU and Colorado State do not. Boise State also hosting FSU at home, so other P5 schools do not have a problem to play them at Boise.

Boise State football only
BYU
Cincinnati
UConn football only
UCF
USF

That would be the compromise. Houston, SMU and Rice do not have the 8 votes to be voted in. There are a backlash against any other Texas schools in the conference. It gives Texas too much power over the other schools.

If you want double round robin in basketball and 20 conference games, 11 members is perfect.

No, no, no. Speaking as a Big Ten guy, 11 members is a PITA. It removes a lot of flexibility since it's impossible to have 9 conference games for football with 11 members - it would need to be either 8 or 10 conference games. Plus, it means that at least 1 conference school needs to be on a bye every single week. That's not a big deal in the first 6 weeks or so of the season, but it blows in the back half of the year (and downright awful if you're the odd school out without a game during rivalry week).

After the Big Ten experience, no sane conference should ever willingly have 11 football members. (Of course, the Big 12 may very well not be sane.)

EDIT: I now see that the proposal was to have 1 all-sports member and 1 football-only member. I guess that's a little more workable - having an odd number in basketball isn't as bad as having an odd number in football. Still, it's not optimal. You only do that when you're adding a school like Penn State (as the Big Ten did) or Notre Dame (as the ACC did on a partial basis). There isn't a need to do so with the options that the Big 12 is looking at here.

I mean, where will Houston park it's other sports?!? I may be jumping the gun here but I don't think I like where this thing for Houston is headed.

I'm not sure all fans realize that Houston (or any other AAC member) could not go to the Big XII for football unless they moved all their other sports to a conference that doesn't sponsor FBS football. I just don't see the Big XII making such a conditional offer to anybody but BYU, which already has a home for all its other sports. And to be honest, I wouldn't expect Houston to accept such an offer, which they would (and should) likely view as an insult.

I just don't even understand the appeal of a football-only member in this situation. A school like Boise State or one of the service academies as a football-only member is one thing since they are truly only valuable from a football standpoint. However, BYU has a great top-to-bottom athletic department. Even more insane are suggestions to have UConn as a football-only school - why on Earth would the Big 12 not take in their elite men's and women's basketball programs while adding their pedestrian (to put it nicely) football program?

I understand that the sources are going to have to spout the party line that the Big 12 is looking at all options, but realistically, having any football-only members simply doesn't make sense. All of the realistic options that they are looking (especially BYU) would maximize the league's value as all-sports members.

Good points, ken

Houston is heavily investing in its facilities, I too can't see a conditional invite been excepted by Houston.

That's not true Ken. FBS conferences can have Olympic sports only members even if the school in question is playing FBS football in another conference. That's not an NCAA issue. In fact, Boise was going to play Olympic sports in the WAC (which at the time was a FBS conference) and play football in the Big East. Boise later moved to the Big West when the WAC become unstable.

There are no rules against it from the NCAA. However, many conferences have thier own rules that simply don't allow it.

I think that's what he was trying to say.

No idea how that works out for Houston. Maybe AAC just lets them stay in the conf for non-football, balancing Navy football-only?

Hell no Coogs won't be able to keep non-football in AAC. More fans at Coog baseball games than at basketball games. Several games over the past few years had less than 1,000 people. One game was a couple hundred, and I know there's a few on here who can back up that embarrassing fact.
Cheers!

Frank,

The Big 12 doesn't necessarily need to do a football-only with BYU, but at least doing so bypasses the no-Sunday thing.
