Obviously, you'd like to do better than that...but making a bowl should never be looked down upon. Especially given how just a short time ago Memphis couldn't sniff a bowl.

Lost best HC is recent football history, along with a 1st Rd. NFL QB...brand new staff, first time head coach, first time starting QB. B'Ham Bowl would be excusable given that situation...

Wow, I personally think that was a FAR WORSE experience than the B'ham bowl.

Monsoon, we lost (to BGSU and we scorched them this year), the stadium was a high school football stadium and they had to WHEEL in the 'big screen', incredibly annoying PA guy, dumpy area, no food AND a longer drive.

At the B'Ham bowl wasn't played in a monsoon, Legion Field >>>> Ladd Peebles stadium.

The GMAC bowl is the Dollar General Bowl and before that it was the GoDaddy.com bowl.

Dollar General is a VERY appropriate name for that bowl!

The GMAC bowl had $2.50 tall boy beers. I don't understand why you are complaining about parking, food, rain and the announcer.

$2.50 tall boys can make lots of bad memories disappear.

Bowl invite and finishing above .500 would be a successful year. Would be nice to pull a Houston and do much better than expected.

ANY Bowl game is a great achievement for a first year coach at Memphis,

Norvell would be the FIRST EVER Memphis coach to go to a bowl in his first season!

Think about that when you turn your nose up at a certain bowl as inferior...

You beat me to the post. Things are a lot different - it was not that long ago that we were celebrating our first bowl game in a long time.

There is no plan that will alleviate the traffic nightmare and crappy stadium

If I ever go back to a game in Birmingham, I'll spend an extra night and take a shuttle to the game. Traffic was absolutely terrible. My wife and son got out and walked so they wouldn't miss any of the game, by the time I got in the first quarter was over. WEEEEEEE!!!!
That said I'm just excited we're talking about going bowling!!

I was at both. Both sucked. I feel like the Bham Bowl sucked more, but that could be because it was just last year. Everything sucked about Birmingham. The night before, there were no restaurants/bars with less than a 2.5 hour wait after our pep rally. It took about an hour to get a parking spot. It took 2+ hours to get out of the parking lot. The stadium is awful and we played like crap. It all just sucked. I don't think I could convince my wife to step foot in Birmingham again after that experience.

I don't see how a shuttle bus could get in or out any faster than my own truck. What a nightmare getting out. Thankfully we got there way before the game in time to experience the Tiger tent. But leaving was stupid jammed.

RE: Would a Bham bowl appearance this year suffice?
We took the shuttle from in front of the convention area to Legion Field; that was a breeze. But waiting on it to return after the game...well, we finally gave up and called a cab, which came immediately; we hopped in with another family, and then my BF realized they were distant relatives from Memphis.

The night before, we could not get service in any of those chain restaurants in the convention area, and we got ignored or surly glares by the waitstaffs. Getting a drink was another ordeal. The "bar" at the Marriott where the team stayed....OMG, it was a joke.

The area around the stadium looked like Detroit or bombed-out Beirut. And Legion Field.....I felt like I was at Crump Stadium, but way worse.

No, I NEVER want to return to that forsaken city. It's got more problems than Memphis and none of the upside.

There is a nice Midtown area not far away with a cool little ultra-modern hotel and unique, trendy restaurants. That part made our stay at least tolerable.
