That's not entirely true from a conference network perspective. To get the product shown to millions you need the network to get put on a basic tier of cable, and to get put on a basic tier of cable you need the demand to convince the cable company to do it (or do it at a price they find reasonable, which may not be a price the conference is happy with). You want it on a basic tier of cable so that a majority of subscribers to a cable service are paying the monthly carriage fee for the channel, whether they want the channel or not or whether or not they watch the channel.
Having a hypothetical Big 12 Network or AAC Network shoved onto a Sports or high-cost package or tier isn't that valuable, but it only gets kept off that tier and put onto a basic tier if there's enough interest in the market for it.
That also ignores the significant difference in advertising value of a channel that's on basic/low-tier cable compared to one that's not.

I really wish MD would understand that TV markets don't care what he thinks would be good for NIU, the Big 12, etc. Selfishly they want to pay as little as possible but get as big a return as possible for what they choose to show on millions of televisions.
