Still Don't Get It
Why did the B10 take Rutgers over several other good choices from the AAC? Is the New Jersey recruiting that important that they had to take Rutgers? If it was a playing partner for PSU then other AAC choices such as Cincy and UCONN would've been better.

I say this after seeing that Rutgers has been outscored by OSU and Michigan by a grand total of 122-0 with the Michigan game still in the 4th quarter. Last year they lost to the same 2 team 98-23.

Could Cincy or UCONN do any worse? Of course not.

Rutgers is terrible. Didn't make sense then and doesn't make sense now. Good for Rutgers though...

They at least could have taken UCONN. Basketball is great and every now and then they would upset a good big10 team. Rutgers stink in all sports.

That NY/NJ market allure. Too much for the BTN to ignore, unfortunately. I agree UConn would have been a better choice.

They should put a statue of Ray Rice somewhere on their campus because he responsible for their only success.

It just got worse 71-0. Even worse the total yardage difference. Michigan has a slight edge of 540 yards to 6 TOTAL yards for Rutgers. Embarrassing!

That's insane. They have to be worse than Kansas

AAU status. Top 100 US university. NY/NJ media market. NY/NJ recruiting area. Opportunity to play at MSG/NYC. Opportunity to get the B1G Network in New York/New Jersey. Alumni presence in New York/New Jersey. Contiguous/adjacent state to Pennsylvania/Maryland.

There were/are plenty of reasons for the B1G to add Rutgers. None of the those reasons include athletics.

Because they are the flagship university of the nations 51st state, Rutgers, USA.
Cheers!

NY/NJ/Philly allure. Uconn can only claim NYC & Boston.
Cheers!

100% the reason was to get the Big10 network on base cable in New Jersey. If the B1G were to expand, they don't have to worry about divisions getting too tough. Bunch of wins there.

I don't buy the recruiting area or media market. If the team in question is that bad, what recruits was Rutgers taking away from the B10 teams before the offer? As for media, I suggest that teams that lose 78-0 are not producing highly rated games on networks. Not sure I get the MSG, I thought that's Big East territory. As for adjacent to Pennsylvania, so is Ohio and Connecticut not far away.

New Jersey has many more people than Connecticut (they already had Ohio covered), Piscataway is much more accessible from NYC for B1G alums than East Hartford is, and New Jersey high school football is decent while Connecticut high school football is a non-factor. Rutgers got in on a couple of metrics that both make sense and have nothing to do with Rutgers other than that they are in New Jersey and near NYC.

They were picked for cable boxes, but who exactly would be watching them about now except for people who can't get Comedy Central?

Trust me, there is NO Rutgers allure in Philly. Never has been.

My guess is that Syracuse gets the NY allure over Rutgers.

I think is because their conference leaders have a severe drinking problem. Lol

Rutgers had 2 first downs in the whole game

We had the Big 10 Network in DC, years before Maryland joined their conference; makes me wonder if that was the plan all along. UCONN would have been a better choice, but they aren't AAU.

Because's a school's value to a conference has little to do with wins and losses on the field. 07-coffee3
