Let's talk basketball
With only about a month before the season starts it's time to start thinking basketball. I'm still amazed how quickly McKay has turned the program around. Last year we were picked to finish last in the conference. This year we're picked second. Looking over the roster, it's full of guys that are capable of playing high level basketball. A problem McKay may have this year is finding enough minutes for everyone. The fr are too good to sit the bench, but I don't see any returning players who gives up their spot. Baxter-Bell has been a huge surprise. He may have been the best player on the court in the Costa Rico trip. The roster is now stocked with guys that are the size we need.

My expectation for the year is to challenge for a conference championship and win a few games that we shouldn't in the ooc schedule.

Thoughts?

RE: Let's talk basketball
I would expect by the 5th or 6th game the starting lineup will hash itself out. The players who perform the best regardless of experience will get the lions share of playing time. I expect to see improvement over last season. I'll be satisfied with a winning record this year. All in all, we will still be a very young team.

RE: Let's talk basketball
By the time we reach conference play, we should be warmed up and ready for the Big South. I expect us to contend for the championship this year and something like 4th place or better is my expectation. Our non-conference schedule isn't difficult so we should really set ourselves up for a nice season where we max out at 20 wins. Looking at the schedule, I would predict around 15 wins.

I agree with the exception of Ezra Talbert starting. Maybe he will but I think more likely Gardner/Kemrite. Gardner being McKay's top recruit will get a lot of run but Kemrite brings the defensive intangibles that they preach every day.

Problem with starting Kemrite for Ezra is that lineup would have almost no size which makes me lean towards Gardner. Early in season when we play larger schools with bigger front court guys, I expect Josiah Talbert to get a lot more time as well. One of the pg trio of Chen, Barmore or Pacheco are going to play so expect a rotation of 10 guys in the non-conf.

I'm not sure if anyone will redshirt. Originally, I felt after Gardner Barmore would see the most time. I think Josiah will see the most time after Gardner. Plus the addition of Chen and Pacheco getting a lot of time in Costa Rica, I think Barmore would be the likely candidate to redshirt.

There just aren't enough minutes at the guard for all of them. Dawson is going to play a ton and could even play some point with Homesley, Gardner, Baxter-Bell and Kemrite/Reid. That may be the most explosive 5 this season, especially on the offensive end.

I see you root for the Tribe, but you seem to know all it about Liberty basketball. What's your connection?
I agree with you on the starting five. I think it also depends on who has picked up the pack line faster as far as the new guys.

Speaking of rooting, is Liberty anyones #1 school as a fan? I grew up a UofL fan but LU has passed them by with my loyalty and support.

I mean I still cheer for UofL, but I am an LU fan, and if they ever played head to head it's Liberty all the way!

It's my one and only school I root for.

RE: Let's talk basketball
My only issue with rooting for LU is the crappy selection of apparel at the bookstore. I can't be the only one that thinks that. I check weekly and the stuff that looks horrible is always there after a year or so. The stuff that isn't designed by people with bad taste sells out in a week and is never stocked again.

Liberty is my number one school since that's where I got my one and only (for now) degree. I grew up a Penn State fan and never stopped cheering for them but Liberty is still my first and my favorite even as I get a degree from Penn State as well.

I grew up a William & Mary fan but now living in the area a while, I am a huge Liberty basketball fan. Not really into the other sports that much but love basketball.

Looks like there will be a scrimmage on Oct 28th at 6pm. First chance to see this year's team in person.

Also read this weekend, Liberty will be in next year's Paradise Jam event in the Virgin Islands with teams like Colorado and Wake Forest. Games are typically played on ESPN.

I don't think it is a scrimmage. I think it is a regular season game but I'm not positive. Looking at past schedules, I would believe it's a regular season game.
