Comcast fights back against streaming cord cutters
My FB feed is lit up by people complaining bitterly they just got told by Comcast they're exceeding their data cap.

For those looking to discuss the college sports side of this ... this is the thread!

For those looking to discuss the political side of this ... the spin room board beckons with the same thread.

RE: Comcast fights back against streaming cord cutters
Based on my own experience with Comcast customer service, I am surprised that they know enough to do anything as simple as keeping tracking of this, or even send emails to its customers.

I don't think anyone should be surprised by this. And it's just going to grow. Quickly. Also think you're going to find them cracking down on folks sharing passwords for access to streaming on places like ESPN.

It's almost like they are working against ESPN.

RE: Comcast fights back against streaming cord cutters
I've been a Comcast customer for a few years in a market where the cap had been 300GB per month. I went over once. I'm not a gamer and have cable so don't rely on my internet as much - but so watch sports, stream from iTunes, Netflix, and ESPN. My daughter streams a lot in her tablet. It would get bad when I'd have family over and everyone each had a phone and some with tablets. Now it is 1TB and I haven't even come close to going over - but I could see where people who rely on streaming services could get into trouble - especially those who download and play video games.

Not much of a sports angle to this yet -- maybe there will be in 5 years or so if people start watching live sports via streaming video much more often than they are today.

Right now this seems like another attack in Comcast's War on Netflix, with other services like Hulu (and the people who use them) caught in the crossfire. I think Comcast has its own movies-on-demand service that it wants its customers to use instead of subscribing to Netflix.

Could backfire on comcast. Customers could dump comcast altogether and go with alternative services.

On the other hand maybe this makes sense. The other customers most likely to dump comcast, single people who are not home much, probably are not exceeding the limit. Which leaves comcast with just the high usage customers.

so it may make sense for comcast to charge more for a niche market, the stay at home, high data usage customer.

RE: Comcast fights back against streaming cord cutters
So cable providers got into internet markets to control this very thing. Eventually the market will demand separate internet access, with no limits to show cable providers they can't keep raising rates and providing crap setvice, while trying to strongarm the paying public.

I'm a pro business guy, but the cable industry is predatory to their customers and I hope eventually that internet access gets regulated with government oversight, and cable companies can die the death they deserve.

To be sure, let's give Comcast a little bit more "credit" here. When it comes to extracting more fees from customers, they're as skilled as the OJ legal defense team in pounding every exception to the exception and then some. I have little doubt that Comcast can implement data cap overage fees to the finest detail with the flick of a switch.

Now, if you're talking about Comcast customer service for a billing mistake, such as how I had to spend yet another hour with them a couple of days ago since I received a past due notice for the 4th straight month because they have f*cked up my automatic payment setup for the 4th straight time, then they're about as effective as Mr. Magoo looking for a needle in the middle of a hurricane.

When I got cable, it was Cox Cable that I got with unlimited data transfer. When they sold it to Suddenlink? We got our contract broken by Suddenlink by putting a cap on our Internet usage. They did not honor the contracts that we signed.

Although I am not a fan of the general direction that Alphabet/Google is taking - their fiber product is outstanding! No data caps. Once they enter a market, Google will dominate.

RE: Comcast fights back against streaming cord cutters
One reason I like services like Netflix and HBO is i believe both are legimately trying to provide a user friendly service, and will I give them the benefit of the doubt when I am thinking about which services I want to keep.

On the other hand, Comcast feels like they almost want as customer non-friendly process as possible, so sometimes customers will go out of their way just to get rid of Comcast, simply because they hate Comcast so much.

Not to brush aside the implications of this -- I absolutely believe this is just the start ....

But who's really using 1024 GB of data in a month?? That's over 34 GB per day for 30 days.

goof,

Let's be real. The only reason you like Netflix and HBO streaming is because they don't have commercials. 04-cheers

I wonder if the new 4k stuff will be using a lot more data than we've seen before.

That's what they're claiming. 4K and virtual reality gaming.

But who's really using 1024 GB of data in a month?? That's over 34 GB per day for 30 days.

I easily use more than that.

1 TB a month = 1000 GB a month = 33.3 GB a day

Netflix SD = 0.7 GB/hr
Netflix HD = 3 GB/hr
Netflix 4K = 7 GB/hr

So it takes just 5 hours a day of 4K Netflix to crush your cap. Other heavy users in similar content areas to Netflix would include Hulu, WatchESPN, Vudu, Vue, Sling, etc.

Other heavy users:
- Data backup services
- Video games (major AAA titles on Steam can easily weigh in at over 50 GB, and can have patch set updates over 5 GB in size)
- YouTube, particularly YouTube HD and 4K, particularly if you have kiddos
- Twitch, particularly in HD, particularly if you have kiddos
- Linux distributions and distribution upgrades (several GBs)
- Porn

I use the better part of a TB a month just in data transfer and backup. But, I do realize I'm a heavy user and behave. I do my most heavy traffic overnight when the pipe is mostly empty.

I just logged into my router to check my total transfer for the last 30 days: 1.4 TB

RE: Comcast fights back against streaming cord cutters
I have Comcast in Houston. Supposedly, I'm getting this 'treatment' starting November 1. I haven't received any notification as far as I can tell.

I think a solution is to simply have the Cities create public utilities to provide internet, much like they did with power companies back in the 1930s. They could contract it out, but it should be specifically prohibited to be controlled by any entity holding any cable, sports, or terrestrial television ownership interests.

Also, note that many municipalities have at least one cable/internet provider that is regulated by that municipality. In Houston, that regulated cable/internet provider is ... Comcast.

I just heard on the local news last night, lots of places are looking into taxing Netflix to recoup the taxes they're losing on cable tvs.
