Big Ten has low turnout at media day
https://www.google.com/amp/qctimes.com/s...tmobile-us

It appears moving this years basketball media day to Washington D.C. was not too popular with the Midwest press, many local media outlets decided not to send reporters to DC that would typically go to Chicago or Indiana.

This is a not a good predictor for how popular the conference tourney is going to be in DC this season.

RE: Big Ten has low turnout at media day
It will be interesting to see what kind of attendance figures the B1G Tournament gets in D.C. next year (this season). Obviously, Maryland will be very well represented, but it will be telling to see if fans from MSU, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois travel and fill the place. It'll be even more telling next year when they finally get access to Madison Square Garden.

It has been clear what the B1G has been trying to do with its eastward expansion, and it has clearly and dramatically increased the TV revenue, but it will be interesting to see how it affects attendance.

Indiana fans should be there in good numbers; they were for the NCAA regional against Syracuse a few years ago.

Overall there's a tremendous B1G alumni presence in the DC metro.

Meh. I don't think the fact that smaller papers in the Midwest aren't sending people to media day has anything to do with the potential attendance for the conference tourney in DC. There are a lot of Big Ten grads on the East Coast (even if you don't count newcomers Maryland and Rutgers), which is what really matters for attendance. The Big Ten needed to move East - just staying in the Midwest simply was never an option for the long-term (and they recognized that over 20 years ago when they added Penn State). I'll take the increased coverage from the NYC and DC media markets any day of the week.

The primary paper that covers AState has lost 57% of its circulation the last four years. They no longer cover the conference media days in football and basketball in person and no longer send a reporter to any football road games (after not missing a road game for more than 40 years).

Has nothing to do with whether anyone will go to the games and is all about the capacity of the newspaper to afford the trip.

think it's pretty telling that an Iowa fan started this thread.

Yeah, I'm sure the Davenport Big Ten beat writer was not pleased about having to fly to DC instead of driving to Chicago.

Illogical conference alignments are not always 100% effective.

It might be enough to make some fans sit at home, though a different fan, those transplanted into the DC region, might show up to fill in whatever gaps there could be.

It's not cheap staying in that area, and what kind of message are you sending to your core fan? From over here, they're shaking them up for more money and marginalizing them for those who might fetch more value, but aren't or haven't traditionally or consistently been a supporter for conference schools.

But, this had to happen to some degree. The conference purposefully and intentionally went eastward to tap into these areas where many of the conference members' alumni flocked while picking up new meat along the way. Forcing the eastern schools to do the Detroit-Indianapolis-Chicago thing all the time wouldn't fly, either.

As well as some of the fans transplanted into the NYC area.

And visa/versa when it's in NY.
