RE: Rynearson Stadium
A majority of non-real fans (ex: someone's wife/gf who's a big fan of ND or MSU doesn't count) -- think that "real D1" are the non-directional/recognizable football teams... and believe everyone else is D1AA/FCS/D2 to whatever degree.

Agree. There are more MAC alums that are owners of OSU and UM gear then those pay attention to their own School. The average Mac alum does not even know his school is FBS.

If they pay attention to football, I highly doubt that. They know their school is FBS they just choose to bandwagon the bigger school.

BTW, to correct one other thing in this write up: There was no law passed in Michigan that banned the use of Native American nicknames.

True. Instead the Michigan Civil Rights Commission released a report stating that colleges use of Native American mascots could violate state the Elliot-Larson Civil Rights Act. http://aistm.org/1988michigan.htm

That's my point. The average fan does not pay attention to the MAC, even if they went to school there.

Yeah, I agree with that, if they were half-way fans at least of their football team, they'd know they were FBS. At least for a while since college. But many, as pointed out, who don't really follow college sports except for following MSU/UM/ND games, and just tailgate etc -- usually them being gals -- still won't know what "FBS means, but all in all, not realize their G5 team who they don't follow but just tailgate for while awaiting their MSU/UM/ND game, is a "real D1", especially after college after the reminders to them that they are "real D1" have passed.

The average student doesnt care about sports and couldn't name 5 NFL teams. Lots of people are at school for um... School. It's the percentage of those who care about sports who care about their MAC team and their attendance that's important.... I care that we have a top25 attended womens bball program and that we average 4,500 for the men, and am happy when we have over 23k in the house for football games. I also poke fun at EMU for having a high school environment. It's what sports fans do... I make fun of EMU for having no fans so I dont feel bad when we lose. I make fun of the Indians for being 27th in attendance for a first place team compared to my Tigers too... It's pathetic. Support your teams people.

Totally agree with this statement. Looking at other boards, it's obvious that people don't understand the role academics play in college sports. People are making disparaging comments about schools like Kansas and Tulane in conference realignment without thinking about the fact that these are two of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country.
