The long game was there....but the LA Tech coaches stuck with what i call the extreme short game, i.e., short screen passes, bubble screens, and run game. Both UTEP and MTSU crowded the line of scrimmage by "cheating up" (technical team, not really cheating), and our coaches were too stupid to make them pay for it by throwing the deep ball. Obviously that changed in Tech's game against WKU.

RE: Western Kentucky @ Louisiana Tech
LA Tech's special teams gave up 21 points Thursday night against WKU. The Tech kickoff coverage team gave up two very long kick returns (70 yds? and 90 yds?) that gave WKU very short fields on offense. And of course the blocked punt in the 4th qtr made Tech look like 5th graders.
Those 3 special teams mistakes essentially gave WKU 21 points, and kept pressure on Tech's offense and defense all night.

I felt like we just stopped attempting deep passes.

Skip Holtz HATES to throw deep passes, but he did it early against WKU because WKU's DB's were "cheating up" on the Line of scrimmage just like MTSU and UTEP did the previous 2 weeks. Holtz only did it because he HAD too. It was a very smart move. But he still hates it.

RE: Western Kentucky @ Louisiana Tech
Well three things got bruised or broken on Thursday...
Western's CUSA win streak...only fitting Tech ended it. Tech was the last team to beat Western
Western's defense
My back...too old for a 9 hour drive, 4 hours sitting on bleachers, then 9 hours driving home...well 12 hours home. Had to pull over for 3 hours.... I kept seeing Henderson flying past me down the interstate. So it was time to get some rest.
I hate Ruston...nothing wrong with the place but it always makes for a long drive home. Tech has Western's number playing at home. I can see why Tech wins at home in football and basketball...HOME COOKING!. No I'm only joking...Tech played hard and just beat our butts.
I told my son, Western still had a chance when Tech started milking the clock....why do coaches do that. It almost always lets the other team back in the game and makes it closer at the end. PLAY TO FREAKING WIN! Western did it against Vandy and we loss...really thought Tech was going to end up the same way.
No complaints from anything on this trip...other than the drive and losing. Tech just played better than Western and held on at the end.
Couple things about the stadium...
I don't remember hearing the repeat from every sound coming the scoreboard on my last trip. Has this always happened or a new problem? I know it drove me crazy. That along with it blasting on, on what seemed like every 15 seconds. Don't remember that either.
The crowd...thought it would be more people at the game going by 30 minutes before kickoff. Western usually has a late arriving crowd so I assume Tech would also. 30 minutes before game time over 50% of the total people at this game were in the stadium. So I expected twice as many more by middle of the first quarter. I still think it was a decent crowd for a Thursday night and especially on the students side.
The PA guy is awful... hell he talks worse than I type. Well not that bad but close
Nothing but good interaction on our part with Tech fans. A handful were at the BQ joint (can't recall the name) down the block from the main street running in front of the stadium. All friendly and so were the students that sit in the section next to ours. Some drunk...but friendly drunk. Not the stupid, loud mouth drunks that we have all been around at some point at a sporting event.
Again Tech deserved the win and if not for the slowdown in play this game was over 30 minutes before it was...and I would have did something I never do. Leave a Western game early. On the way home I said this would be my last trip to Tech...just too long of a drive and it KILLED my hurting back. After getting some rest and sleep yesterday and last night....
I'm fairly sure I will see Ruston one more time...in Feb. Basketball are easier trips...two games on one trip and anytime I get to see the Gulf and get some fishing in, in the dead of winter. Even the ugly brown waters of the Gulf in Mississippi...I'm going to take it.
Congratulation on ending Western's winning streak. Hope the next 13 games for Western goes just as the 13 before Thursday. If Tech's defense improves by the end of the season I can see them in the CUSA championship game. Not because you beat Western...I thought your offense was that good before Thursday night.

With our capability to do so, thats just silly. We need to see it more.

Henderson was out for the 2nf half of MTSU & the UTEP game

Yeah, we've seen TONS of bombs to Carlos over the past 2 + seasons. Not sure where the "never throwing deep" is coming from. He averages about 20 yards per reception at Tech.

Marshall would be even better. Still need you to find a way to have the game in Shreveport (our stadium is supposed to undergo construction after the last game). Thanks in advance.
Without a defense we will be very fortunate to participate in the CCG, but I am hopeful. A little defense and we would be 5-1. Had we made TxTech punt, even once, maybe 6-0. But, alas, we are not.

I still say that if Higgins plays vs Arkansas, we win that.

if Tech gets to host the championship game they'd have to do so at Independence Stadium in Shreveport

I'm guessing high school playoffs? If so I believe they would have to be moved around and if you cannot host, the game goes to the eastern champion. Western had that problem last year...
had to rework the high school playoff schedule

Our old press box is going down just a few days after Homecoming (final game- UTSA) so the new one can be finished by the opener next season.

It would be a great game for bringing out the casual fans of Shreveport.

Don't know the rules but I do know Western had to make changes to the high school playoffs so we could host.
If some how Western makes it to that game this year....
ANYWHERE but Ruston is fine with me. Nothing against the city...Western (my 3 trips) hasn't went very well there.
