They need the smaller leagues and vice versa.

No one with a brain is going to watch CFB just to watch 64 teams, especially when about 10 of them suck and there are better teams not in the P4. I certainly wouldn't.

Maybe the longview breaking off is the play, but it would hurt in the short term.

The threat of breaking away is what will always be there - to keep the little guys and the NCAA in check.

IMO

Well, there's only 32 NFL teams and that seems to satisfy the public. I think the bigger threat of breaking away is that it might trigger some political action that would hurt the schools. They'll maintain the illusion that we're all included - we're just not all included. IMO

Yeah, but the NFL has always expanded.

This is more like the NFL going from 32 to 22 teams. There would be a lot of pizzed of fansbases/cities/media markets.

I mean, I for one say I would never watch P4 if it was only 64 teams. I'm sure there are others as well.

Like I said, short term, it would be a bad move - certain media, fans, politicians, etc would raise hell.

Long term, they'd prob be fine, but I'm talking another generation passing before it settled down.

The money that FedEx "pledged" is actually money that FedEx is willing to spend on naming rights to The Big 12 Championship Game and sponsorship of other sports. That will include a massive amount of branding and advertising. The FedEx money is not a donation.

The American isn't destroyed if UCONN leaves.

Just saying.

All others are disposable just as we are and easily replaced with the right program. But if and when we lose 2 teams, you go get Northern Illinois. And then as we slowly get poached, the American needs to take a state school approach for replacements:

UMASS
Arkansas State
Georgia State
Texas State
South Carolina State
Missouri State
South Dakota State
Utah State
NM state
NM
Nevada
Colorado state

If we are ever going to be a true challenger brand type of conference we are going to have to start adding state schools.

Is Memphis a state school?

Yes

Where can they go?

Form the alliance with the MWC for the mega-conference. Keep 12 in the East and 12 in the West. Run each side like its own league, with scheduling agreements for the other side. Have a CCG on each side. Petition for expanding the CFP's with the winners of each CCG playing each other in one of the quarter-final playoff games. You're guaranteed a team in the semi's.

Memphis would play 5 division games, 3 inter-division AAC games, 2 MWC games, 2 OOC. It would be a long rotation through the MWC, but enough to keep interest up. You can get creative in other sports with inter-conference weekend tourneys and challenges.

This would be cool.

Don't get too close on that visit. Something might rub off.

I like the asscoiation an alliance would bring. But the reason I would argue against an "alliance" is that you get the competition without the $$ benefit of a stable TV product. The AAC, instead, should aggressively attempt to get the top 4 MW schools (BSU, SDSU, AFA & CSU) to join the AAC in a western div along with SMU, Tulsa & Navy. This would essentially destroy the MW as a competitor for the NY6 bowl & should substantially increase the value of the AAC TV rights. Such an expansion might also force the hand of BYU to join since many of their better regional opponents would otherwise not be available for scheduling (maybe but not essential). ADD Wichita St & VCU to complete the FB-only memberships of Navy & AFA & you have a FB/BB conference that rivals the power conferences.
