At first I thought he said "This open week is gonna be a better week" (instead of what he actually said, "This open week is gonna be "Get Better" week") and I thought to myself "Yes, this week will be better because we won't lose to someone".

Shouldn't every week be "get better" week? Or do they have weeks where they plan to stay the same or get worse?

We try to cover the receivers 1 on 1, no matter what, and we don't have the talent to do that anymore. I have to imagine a change in schemes could at least help reduce the ypc average since I don't think our talent level is as much of an outlier as the stats suggest.
Nightowl could shed some light, but I didn't get the impression we stuck to a single coverage type.
Moreover, if you are advocating zone, versus man-to-man, don't you really need to have a strong pass rush (which we had several years ago as I-45 alluded to) to make that effective? We may blitz more, but that has its drawbacks, and can't be an every down occurrence.
If a QB has a long time to throw, I'm not sure that the coverage is necessarily the only, and maybe not the biggest, problem. Blasingame seems to be a decent defender, but none of our defensive backs are miracle workers.

Ideally, you should mix up coverages. If you stay in one coverage, a good OC knows how to beat it. My problem watching a game on TV is that the TV camera covers so little of the defensive side of the ball that it can be hard to determine what coverage they are in. Maybe nightowl or ruowls can shed more light.

What I see when I watch live is, time after time, the receiver runs right by the safety who is staring into the backfield and has not yet taken a step. I've seen plays where the receiver is past the safety and the football is in the air, and the safety still hasn't moved. Others who are knowledgeable football fans have observed the same thing. I find that mystifying. It simply makes no sense.

That's been a problem with every Bailiff team. Driesbach or Thurmond, the DC hasn't mattered. I think Thurmond is a good coach. I have friends who have coached with him at prior jobs, and they all speak very highly of him.

For the life of me, I don't understand. I simply cannot make any sense of it at all. Can anyone explain WTF they are doing?

I interpret it as in getting healthy (i.e., get better).

Whether it's through healthier players or playing better, just get better.

To stir the pot some more, getting better (even as the rest of you interpreted it) doesn't mean that Rice is going to win. Just play better (which is so open to interpretation). *sigh*

Tampa 2 doesn't change much.

Doesn't this get into the execution/repetition thing you like so much? Why vary a coverage if you are very good in executing one?

As nightowl has stated, secondaries try to confuse you. This messes up the reads and adjustments. Reading The Perfect Pass, the zone blitz messed up their routes and reads. But this gets to the ideas I have been saying all along about throwing and coverages. The dynamics of a defense never change. You have to cover the 6 eligible receivers/backs and occupy linemen. There is no magic play that will defeat any given coverage. Some plays may stress a certain defense better but it is all execution.

A zone blitz shouldn't change a read or a route. All it is is a responsibility exchange. As such, the dynamics of the defense doesn't change. However, the angles of implementation change for the defense so the receivers only have to adjust their vectors accordingly.

It is very hard for a defender to put himself into a position to cover when he is putting himself into a run fit first. There is your answer. Nightowl has already said this and I defer to him to elaborate.
