Of course, Strong has no history of competing for titles like coaches at those places. At least Miles had years of top ten rankings and national title hunts before he seemingly got unfairly canned. Same for Solich, Kelly and Holtz at the other two.

I'm patient too but how much longer are the athletic program and fans gonna take this?

This is what I'm talking about when I talk about choice. Strong ran away all of Brown's bad boys and instituted a culture of class and honesty in the lockerroom. In light of what happened at Baylor (and I had a big thread on that on the offseason) that's to be applauded but we're in October and no one cares that he's trying to win the right way. They only care that one of the best programs in college sports is getting humiliated weekly, these are the choices we make.

Lou Holtz and Charlie Weiss had similar results. It won't be for long that there will be Kelly's head on the chopping blocks.

Firing him now may stir things up and save the season, agreed.

Well last year he had one of the worst offenses in Texas history.
The last two years he has had the two worst defenses in Texas history. The defense is regressing.
And the team just makes stupid mistakes and looks lost on the field with constant blown assignments. 3 blocked extra points in a row?

It's time for a change, it doesn't look like progress is being made. Texas shouldn't be getting passed yearly by every other major Texas program.

Baffling how a program with as much money and support as Texas could ever really be as down as they've been. It should be like Alabama.

It happens to every school. Look at Alabama 1997-2007. Only 4 seasons (officially after forfeits-only 6 w/o them) above .500.

I don't think it's correct to put UCLA and Miami in with that list. But fair enough, point taken.

UCLA has a better history than you may think, spread out over many generations. It's a basketball school but they've held their own in football.

Miami? If they ever come back, which they may be doing now, we could add them otherwise they had one big burst and that's it.

RE: interesting comments re. Texas
so what you are saying is that it is expected that UCLA will suck?

because since 1991 (24 seasons) UCLA has been ranked a grand total of 7 times

in that same period Texas has been ranked 16 times

UCLA was ranked 3 times in the top 10 and 1 time in the top 5 (#5) in that period

Texas was ranked in the top 10 seven times in that same period and five times in the top 5 including a MNC and a #2 ranking

so Texas in the last 24 seasons was ranked in the top 10 as many times as UCLA was ranked TOTAL in that same period

so if you are asking "what is wring with Texas" well unless you are saying that you expect UCLA to pretty much do little of significance then you have to toss them into the discussion and you have to say that they are terrible with taking advantage of their advantages relative to Texas

unless you are saying somehow that UCLA does not have money, they are in a terrible place to recruit to and their academics are a detriment to recruiting......which would be a specious argument at best

Herman can only coach one team.

Who would the other 3 pick up? They're not hiring a MAC coach (Fleck).

Kelly will still be at ND next season.

Oregon won't go after Herman. Kiffin, maybe.

Sucks that Houston will be supplying hot coaching prospects for all eternity.

C2,

I'm not talking purely on-field performance. My point (about Texas) had to do with money and support of the program.

Of course UCLA is on the top tier, like maybe the top 30 programs in the country. But I think the top 10ish are really at an elite level when it comes to money and fan support.

Side question: any chance in h___ that Houston would take Briles back, ala Louisville??

Possible...and I don't think what he did was anywhere near as bad as what Petrino did, so why not?

They all want what we have, but in the same breath argue that we aren't worthy. It's a joke.

I imagine we'll try to offer Herman a new contract between now and the end of the year, with a much higher salary and buyout. The cards will be face up on the table at that point. If he doesn't want to sign, that's fine, but hopefully it's USC or Notre Dame, and not UT or LSU. I don't want to feel about Herman, like I do about Sumlin and Briles.

Hell no.

I think our list would begin and end with Todd Orlando. I'm not usually for "continuity" hires, but what he has done with our defense has been nothing short of incredible. I'd also try to retain Applewhite by offering him Asst. Head Coach & OC, and a 3x salary increase.

It's better than the alternative, which is that you hire a coach who doesn't win much, and no one wants to hire him away, and then he keeps turning out mediocre or worse seasons for your team until your boosters are ready to pay his buyout.
