Toledo Defense
Is it that bad, or is it just a defense that returned 3 starters and finally plays a quality offense?

I'll let you know after we play Eastern Michigan.

Gotta give their OC credit, I think. Even Williams could not have run it up the middle on us all night. They killed us with that slant to the outside. They probably didn't think we had the athleticism out there to stop it and they were right.

RE: Toledo Defense
We're not physical enough on the edge for BYU. We'll destroy most of the MAC. Don't get me started on the egregious number of holding no-calls at the point of attack or I might have a seizure. The altitude was certainly a factor late in the game. I'm proud of the toughness and resilience of this team regardless of the outcome.

Well I didn't expect that. Future Big 12 BYU team took it to the Rockets. No shame here as BYU which has been a quarterback power house in the past, did it again. Defense was exposed, only time will tell how well they will show inside the MAC. WMU now does concern me with their offensive attack.

WMU is no where near as physical as BYU. They're definitely the best team left on the schedule and have some talented RBs, but I still like the Rockets for the W. Can anyone else keep pace with our offense? Doubtful.

Think we missed Earl Moore
Taafe was a step slow on many plays (and so was Woodley on a few too) But I agree, when we held the edge he turned it in for large chunks of yardage and when they sealed the edge he really pulled off some big runs

RE: Toledo Defense
Still think we will be fine against everyone else on our schedule but WMU does worry me a bit more now. However, we still pressured the QB and kept a former National player of the year to about 50% pass completions (if we could have just stopped that late long pass!!)

Great effort though by both sides. What a fun game to watch....an instant classic.

It was like watching a Rocky movie with both sides answering the bell after taking a big shot to the chin (over and over and over)

I said Dantin must have felt at home because by the middle of the 3rd Q it was looking like whoever had the ball last would win. Just like the old days when Dantin was QB

Altitude was a factor on the defense. Offense big plays lead to quick turnarounds.

They were sapped at the end and u could tell.

All in all it was an entertaining game that lead me to stay up WAY TOO LATE

RE: Toledo Defense
I think there is a lot of blame to go around to explain the D.

Yep, UT was playing a much better, much more physical team. And as indianasniff points out the altitude really hurt. They played pretty stout in Q2, but by the middle of Q3 they were clearly gassed. Adeniyi looked like he might have been ill in addition to the altitude and although he gave valiant effort, he wasn't the same player in the 2nd half at all. Hester disappeared in the 2nd half too. BYU highlighted UTs lack of depth. Davis played the 1st couple series at LB but didn't seem ready for the big stage yet. Jhonny Williams was in for a bit when Adeniyi was in the locker room, but didn't last more than a few plays. A better rotation might have been able to keep some of the guys fresher in the 4th, but it doesn't look like they are too confident in many players beyond the starters on the DL and at LB.

No one set the edge, time and time again, which is partially the players but I think also partially on the coaches. It seemed like BYU ran to the left about 75% of the time, but I don't think UT overloaded that side even once to force them to do something different. Surprised UT didn't try putting 11 men in the box a few times to stop the run at all costs and force the QB to make a play, just as a change of pace to try something. So, I think the coaches deserve some of the blame too.

Four games with no forced turnovers.

The D is likely still gonna be tired next week. Normally, playing EMU, that would not be a worry, but this year, I don't know. I hope this season isn't like 2011, where we need to win MAC games 63-60 ... but the good thing is, I think the offense has the potential to be able to do that against most of the MAC teams.

EMU is still EMU. The black hole of college football is not going to transform overnight.

EMU will come out of the BG game with no confidence in their offense and physically beat up by that suffocating BG defense. yes, that was sarcasm. The only good thing is that EMU will probably be over-confident in their offense after seeing how easy it is to move the ball today.

RE: Toledo Defense
We lost a Defensive Coordinator and retained the one on Offense, even though he's now head coach. Last year's D MIGHT have done better. For the most part, I think they were out gunned and adjusted about as well as the talent could dictate. They had some great runs during the game, end of first Q and the second Q.

BYU over 5 games is less that 2 TDs from undefeated against not a single team with a losing record, Against three P12'a including a major rival and a B12. Two of their opponents are undefeated. The other two played ranked teams very competitively.

Our D was solid but needs depth. If health remains, the newer guys will add to the depth. If BYU gets some wins with THEIR schedule, as they move up, so will we.

RE: Toledo Defense
This was a great game and great atmosphere. BYU has a bunch of football tradition, and the fan base is bought in. The game day experience at BYU was exciting.

BYU's OL line did a great job blocking and Williams is a beast. He is explosive and strong. UT's d-line is no slouch, but in the second half I was longing for a D-line tackle, as opposed to a DB tackle. UT got pushed around last night to some degree, but honestly without 2 picks and a blocked FG, Toledo very likely wins the game.

Regardless, Toledo's WR's are fantastic. Each if the 3 starters are dependable and could go the distance on any play. Hunt was great, but when he was out Toledo was not as effective.

UT definitely missed Earl Moore and Jaylen Coleman, but all is not lost. UT is solid, and the class of the MAC.

Nice job last night!! What a great experience to take in!

Why is the excuse the D was gassed?
They came out and got punched in the mouth instantly after halftime when they were rested

We really miss Earl Moore. Hestor played well, but the other DT's got pushed around. We also need some help at LB. Thought BYU o line was very good.

The Defense's inability to set the edge and not let the ball get outside was a major factor in the loss. It appeared we were in 2 deep a lot of the game, which I think was a mistake. We needed to drop a safety down to help contain the run. BYU had "one" player on Offense that was the difference maker. We just slow him down and we win the game. One the positive side, our Offense is dangerous!! we are loaded with play makers. Woodside is playing at a very high level... It would be a shame if this team doesn't finally get a MAC Championship Trophy this year.
