NIU recruiting advantage/bump from 2013 Orange Bowl????????
It just plain never happened and the fact is NIU has received literally a zero recruiting bump or advantage from this high profile game. One could argue that NIU's recruiting is now worse under Carey after THE game than before.
NIU used to love to say we "coach them up" from 2 stars but that is clearly not happening now either due to the staff or lower quality players or both.
The fact is that it is extremely hard for any G5 school to really rise-up in the college football universe. Boise has done it to the greatest extent (kudos to BSU) but not many others have succeeded. Houston is on the move and UC to some extent but they are also back-sliding.
it is very important to recruit consistently at any level but a few sub par classes and injuries (burn red-shirts) and there can be 3 years of wasteland at the G5 level. G5 schools must red-shirt for competitiveness. The smaller P5 schools do this as well - think of Wake Forrest, Vandy, etc. However, The vast majority of P5 teams must play their freshman or risk transfers and defections.
UT has been recruiting well for upwards of 8 straight recruiting cycles and the 2017 class looks very solid. This is good news for UT and we have done it slow and steady and without major flash. This bodes well for UT. Despite coaching changes the winning culture at UT is firmly entrenched. Same for recruiting.

I think NIU fans can respond better to the question of whether or not that really helped recruiting. They've been a respected program for years and I expect them to turn this around in a very short time

Just because we haven't been beating them doesn't mean other teams weren't.

I totally respect NIU's accomplishments on the field. My point is simply that NIU saw no program bounce due to THE game. I believe it is very difficult to move fwd by any G5 team since it is all about cash or being cashless

Boca shows a good analysis which actually proves my assumption is wrong which is OK. The results either prove recruiting ratings are worthless or its the staff at NIU!!!
Good input Boca

One major problem is how well the class fits the programs needs and how well are the other programs around you are recruiting.
You could have a lot of great skill commits, giving the class a high ranking but your missing the OL/DL that you separately need. Of course they're guys that don't make it to campus, transfer out, or have a career ending injury, etc.

Its not recruiting that is causing NIU's downfall, it is the coaching that is tearing the program apart. Outside of Lynch/Harnish/Wolfe/Turner, I'd be willing to bet that the collection of players NIU has currently is some of the best in program history. If you watch the games though, it is quite obvious they are not playing to their full potential. I am hoping this is just a one year fall but who knows. It will all depend on what happens this offseason and hopefully Carey will get the boot.
