RE: Clemson bans harambe jokes ... because racism (?!) and rape (??!!)
This is a poor job by the Clemson brain trust, IMO.

They say that they are not banning the Harambe signs but there is no question they were threatening that kid and basically daring him to test them.

Not good or smart on their part and they deserve to get thumped for it. It was arrogant, stupid and wrong–headed on every level.

I honestly believe that liberals tend to be less open-minded and tolerant of opposing views than their conservative counterparts. At the very least, it is a dead heat. Conservatives tend to be a bit crazier but the liberals tend to be too rigid, IMO. Their attitude seems to be, "Nope, this is the right perspective and anything else is dumb or racist or intolerant or what have you."

It doesn't work that way. It is never that simple.

I think Clemson sent out the email because they're worried about their perception should a student make a gorilla joke. They are a DC hool in the deep South and schools in that part of the country are always battling perception issues on the race relations front. However, this type of censorship is just as bad and they are going to be rightly crucified for it.

Harambe was a gorilla who was tragically killed. It was a huge national story and has become a running joke throughout the country. It has nothing to do with race and it only becomes a racial issue whenever well-meaning college officials make it a racial issue.

Look, if this kid is stupid enough to hold up a racially charged sign on national television then I say throw the book at him. But why would you assume that the signs are going to be inherently racist?

That's weird.

I do not believe that political correctness is this country's greatest problem or anywhere near its greatest problem. Hell, I wish that was our greatest problem. I truly believe that's something people say without really thinking about it.

Can the PC Police be incredibly annoying? Of course they can.

Can the semantics become absurd? Of course they can and of course it can become insulting.

However, both sides do it all the time. We have a problem with France over some dumb foreign-policy issue? Well, now they are officially "freedom fries." That's political correctness.

Don't like the term "global warming?" No problem, it is now officially "climate change." That too is brazen political correctness.

Frank Luntz has made a career out of political correctness and rebranding unpopular issues.

We're not torturing suspected terrorists in our military base in Cuba. Nope, those are merely "advanced interrogation techniques."

More PC spin and ultimately harmless – just like most other PC.

It's exactly the same BS that the left constantly pulls over non-issues like this one but no one ever calls out the right for their hypocrisy. I hate them both from the bottom of my heart so save the political pom-poms for someone who is naïve enough to believe the one side is good and just while the other side is bad and immoral.

Spoiler alert: the power brokers on both sides are bad and immoral human beings and their blind followers who get all of their information from echo chamber cable television networks, Facebook, etc., and then parrot it everywhere they can, are absolutely ruining our democracy.

Civil disagreements seems to be gone. It can no longer be a matter of, "i see where you are coming from and I hadn't thought of it like that. However, I still don't agree with you and here is why..."

Now it is, "What, you have the nerve to disagree with my opinion about a highly complex issue that neither of us fully understands? Well then you are an idiot and a racist or you are a naïve goofball (depending on your own political persuasion)."

That worries me a hell of a lot and both sides are guilty as sin of doing it.

I agree with almost all of this even though I am a very liberal person. One additional point, many liberal officials, most notably Obama, have begun to speak out about this, particularly on college campuses. I do think there's some growing backlash among liberals to this pc culture.

This isn't to say though that conservatives don't sometimes hide behind "not being pc" when they say racist and sexist things and that bothers me.

Well to be fair, The original concept behind being politically correct was to give voice and respect to the voiceless.04-cheers

I'm not a liberal person, but this is basically it. The fact that political correctness has been so absurdly expanded now gives cover for people to say truly inappropriate things and brush it off as "Sorry I'm not politically correct."

The movement to teach society to appreciate that a Chinese person doesn't want to be called a chink, or that it's not appropriate to ask your secretary to sit on your lap...there's nothing wrong with that. More than nothing wrong with that...that's what a society should be doing.

However, truly absurd stuff that started coming out in the 90s...like when insisting the word "picnic" be banned, or making reprimanding an employee for referring to a slave drive...it's counterproductive.

If everything is offensive, nothing is.

I'm not an Obama guy, but I appreciate him taking the stand you're referring to.

wut. Obama stokes this kind of political correctness. he sees racism in everything

liberals falsely accuse conservatives of racism even though the racism in this country was done by Democrats in the past.

People care more about a gorilla dying than the thousands of Christian martyrs in the world.

Our priorities are messed up.
